Lethal may be hard to beat in any of the races she competes in at Christmas. Eka and Lady Anstruther worked along usefully. They will be in tip-top farm for Christmas. Bonogne worked half a mile in 51J sec. Euphonium and Enare ran half a mile in 50 J sec. The Lamb ran six furlongs assisted by Orazone over the last three furlongs in Imin. 17Jsec. The Lamb is very fit. San Fera and Grand Lupin ran four furlongs in 51 l-ssec. G. Richards’ Bisogne gelding and Myjone ran four furlongs in 51 l-fisec. Barryander and Acred went five furlongs in Imin. 4sec. Lady Cavendish by herself went five furlongs in Imin. 2£sec., a pleasing effort. Gold Rang: went three furlongs in 37 4-ssec.

Blue Peter strode over six furlongs in Imin. 21 sec. Subjection and Euchre jumped six hurdles. Subjection gave a good display of fast, clean jumping and will be a source of annoyance to the other hurdlers at Christmas. Lady Estelle and Take Take also schooled well. Reremoana was given easy pacing on . the inside. Skypoint, by himself, ran five furlongs in Imin. 3sec. Sovena and Troilus went six furlongs in Imin. 20sec. Kareao went five furlongs in Imin. 3sec., a smart gallop for this veteran, who looks very well. Fort Alice, Lady Acre and a Gasbag colt, went half a mile in 49 l-ssec., Fort Alice having the best of it. Several owners were on the track watching their hqrses work on Saturday morning. The plough was open and proved very fast through the winds and rain previously making it hard. Rehutai (Piteon), Gold Collector (Tito), and Paitonu (Knox) went five furlongs together in Imin. ssec. They were not out to make time. Shut-Eye (Walker) and Taikawhana (Hutchinson) went five furlongs in Imin. 4sec., Glengariff (Conway) joining in the last three furlongs. Tip Tree (Tito) and Airtight (Piteon) went four furlongs in ollsec., keeping together. Royal Acre (Brough) and Silent (Crowley) went half a mile in 50}sec. Royal Acre is a promising youngster in R. Brough’s stable. Benzora (YY’alker) and Lethal (Hutchinson) went five furlongs in Imin. 3sec.

Lethal is showing good promise by the way she hangs on with a good class horse in Benzora. Eka (McCormac) and Lady Anstruther (Cook) went seven furlongs at a good half pace. Bonogne (Tito) rattled ever half a mile by himself in COjsec. Euphonium (Ingram) and Enare (Mills) went twice round at half pace, coming home the last half mile in 50J sec. Mint Leaf will not run in the Atiawa Cup. w » • # Te Monanui, who will be engaged at the Auckland Christmas meeting, has been scratched from the Christmas Handicap at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting.

TURF TOPICS. ( By “Moturoa.”) Dargaville races on Thursday and Saturday. * * Acceptances for the Taranaki Christmas meeting close on Friday. * * * * Stratford weights are due to appear on or about Thursday. * Monaghan does not appear to be overweighted in the Christmas Handicap at New Plymouth. * * * * Merry Jest, Pouma and Oration read well in the Flying at the same meeting. # * * « Jazz Baby has not very strong opposition in the Juvenile Handicap. Chips may be amongst the hardest. * * * * Hurdlers likely to be seen under silk here are a fair crowd, and include useful hacks like Kareao, Tawehi and Ratapiko, which are all well treated. # * * * If started in the Otiawa Hack Cup, Mint Leaf should handle 9.3 fairly well. Pop Off finished well at Woodville, and should go well with 8.3. Sovena may keep the rest busy. * * * * Aucklanders figure largely in the Stewards’ Hack Handicap, and the best of the visitors will take some beating. Dobbin appears to have temporarily mislaid his brilliancy, but Branson is hardly ever outside a dividend. * # • * R. Mason is taking the two year-olds, Agrion and Eulalie to the Auckland meeting. With Cimabue, Royal Ceres, High Finance and Gascony also engaged in the Great Northern Foal Stakes, the Greenwood pair will not have things their own way. # • * * Gauntlet has won a couple of small races, but appears to be harshly treated with 10.6 in the Gratton Hurdles. Archibald (11.7) may be the best of the topweights, and is quite capable of running the distance with that weight. Maunga (10.6) is treated as a has-been, but may prove dangerous. * * * # Those who saw The Thorn finishing, at Feilding in the Stakes, in which he was fourth, will be prepared to see the big son of Absurd troubling the best of them in the Christmas ’Handicap at Ellerslie. Le Choucas, Seatown and Nadarino can also run a good mile, but The Thom may carry "the heads’ ” coin on the day. • * * * Front Rank, a double-winner at the South Canterbury meeting last week, was bred by Sir Geo. Clifford, in whose colours she ran. She is a three-year-old filly by Warplane—Discipline, and is one of the best of the Warplane breed racing at present. • * » * Mr. J. Todd was not long in getting a return with Mime (Absurd —Mimique), scoring a first and a second at Timaru last week. Mime is'well up in the weights now, and will take some placing, to win races. * * * * The imported Celerity H. finished second in the Tycho Handicap on Friday, and scored easily on the second day. She races in the same ownership as Glentrum, and is trained at Riccarton by T. Gillett. # » • * Paperchase carried a big weight (9.0) and ran a smart "six” on Saturday, winning the Juvenile Handicap at Timaru in 1.14. She is a three-year-old filly by Paper Money—Stardancer, and races in the nomination of her breeder, Mr. C. G. Dalgety. * * # * Paper Money’s progeny can not only go fast, but, with age, stay well. John Bradbury and Overdrawn have won Cup races this season, and the last-named showed up well over distances of ground at the recent Canterbury Metropolitan meeting. »’# * * Grand Knight, if saddled up for the A.R.C. Railway Handicap, promises to take a lot of beating, even with 9.13. He won the Feilding Stakes decisively, and big imposts failed to stop him at Riccarton earlier in the month. # * * » Colossus, an imported sire recently landed in New Zealand to the order of Mr. G. Carrington, ol Gisborne, will take the place of the defunct Polydamon. The new arrival is also a son of Polymelus, and his dam, Nation, is by Sundee—Nathalie, by I Royal Hampton.

The late Mr. Paul Hunter, whose death was reported recently, raced a number of horses, of which Crown Gem, Suspicion and Coot are called to mind. The deceased gentleman was honorary treasurer to the Waipukurau Racing Club, and gave much of his time to the intersts of sport. # • # * It could hardly be expected that a freak racehorse like Desert Gold could leave anything nearly as good as herself, but two of her progeny which have raced, Oreum and Auratum, are winners. Oreum is by King John, and Auratum was sired by the wonderful Absurd. If breeding counts for anything, Auratum should be a crae-ker-jack sprinter. * * # • Gold Rep (Spalpeen—Fraulein) continues to win hurdle races at King Country meetings. Considering that he was only raised 61bs for winning at Taumarunui, he paid a remarkably good price on Saturday. • * * * • Flying Juliet (Romeo—Penella) is not a lucky filly, and her owner lost first money at Te Awamutu through interference, the race being awarded to Tall Timber (Hymettus—Red Pine). Flying Juliet is trained by "Paddy” Eva, and Tall Timber by the veteran “Jimmy” Buchanan. # • • * The winner of the Waipa Plate, Ateriria, was bred in Australia, and is by Rossendale —Cheri Cheri. With McTavish in the saddle, Ateriria was a good second favourite. He races in the same ownership at Te Kara, and was purchased when Mr. M. H. Sims took the Auckland Cup winner to the other side of the Tasman. * * • • Te Kara ran a good race under 9.12 in the Te Awamutu Cup, conceding 381bs to the winner, Phaola. The latter ran a good race in the New Zealand Oaks, and stays on well. She may be heard of again at the holiday meetings. # * « * Transformer was served up a good favourite in the Welter at Te Awamutu, but had to put up with second money, the winner turning, up in Quincoma (Quin Abbey—Tecoma), which carries Messrs. Roulston Bros.’ colours. Strange to say, Peter Maxwell was third favourite. • * * * Punters were “on the spot” in the Orakau Hack Handicap, first and second favourites, Pegaway and Branson having the finish to themselves, the former just gaining the verdict. Pegaway is by Lucullus —Peggy Pryde, and is a stable-mate of Te Kara, Ateriria, and Co. Aussie was reckoned to be “the pea” in the Flying at Te Awamutu, but was unplaced at the finish, Green Bonnet (Day Comet —Kakama) beating Archeen by the narrowest of margins. The winner paid a fine dividend. * * * » Scratchings were numerous in the concluding event, the Ohaupo Handicap, and form worked out well, the consistent Miss Egypt and New Moon fighting out the finish.
