THE ENGLISH TURF. OUTSIDER WINS THE CESARE- £ WITCH. (From Oar Own Correspondent.) London, Oct. 14. Once again has the Cesarewitch provided an eye-opener for the English race-goer, for, if Myra Gray was at only half the odds of the recent 100 to 1 winners, Charley’s Mount and Light Dragoon, she was actually a bigger outsider than either of the other pair. Charley's Mount and Light Dragoon had had some form to justify at any rate small sums being risked on them, but Myra Gray, a six-year-old mare, could not by the widest stretch of imagination be made out a winner beforehand. Yet there it' is—she did win—and in the most comfortable fashion, by two lengths from another aged mare, Miss Sport, who had been taken out of selling plates in the early part of the season and exploited in the Ascot Stakes, which she won after there had been a lot of scrummaging involving the death of Mr. James de Rothschild’s Vicnnet and serious injury to the latter’s jockey, Sirett, who, however, has since recovered. Curiously enough, Mrya Gray was taken over to Cottrill’s stables at Lambouru for th© purpose of trying out Miss Sport before the Cesarewitch, and Miss Sport w’on that gallop so easily that it served if possible to put Myra Gray further into the shade than she had been. BIG SUMS LOST. Huge sums of money were lost over Sir Alfred Butt’s Perfect Son, trained by Stanley Wootton. Instead, so much money did this four-year-old carry that at the finish he ousted the top weights,

.Glommen and Foxlaw, from favouritism. Incidentally, Perfect Son was the mount of Sirett, just referred to. The race is easily described. The fields came into view after running about 200 yards, but, with the exception of the nearly white horse, Mendoza, lying about fourth, nothing else was distinguishable owing to a strong sun. When the colours could be discerned, it was seen that Mrya Gray, carrying 3 stone less than Glommen, was in front, lu close attendance were Mendoza, Foxlaw, Try Try Again—the winner of the Newbury Cup—Templesiowe, Perfect Son, Miss Sport, Mafoota, and. Glommen. Passing the bushes—the point at which so many fancied horses fail every year —Myra Gray was well clear, and, despite a late challenge by Miss Sport and Templestowe, she held on to her lead to the end. Mendoza swerved towards the end, but was fourth, and Glommen ran a good race, considering his weight, to get fifth. At any rate, he proved himself a better horse than Foxlaw, in whom there was a lot of confidence after his having defeated Solario a week before. TOO HARD! Vermilion Pencil, the Aga Khan’s representative, trotted in two minutes after the race was over. He could never go on hard ground, and that was the reason for Iris complete failure. Myra Gray is trained by John Scott, who has a small stable at Wantage, and the horse was ridden by the son of another small trainer, a boy named Lionel Read, who is only seventeen years old. This boy had shown much promise during the season, and he was acclaimed as one of the coming apprentices, but few people dreamed he would be strong enough to last out a tiring journey like the Cesarewitch. For it much be remembered that, over such a galftping track, it is just as much a trial for the rider as it is for the horse. The owner of the winner is Mr. J. Davis, who is a starting-price bookmaker operating at Shrewsbury, and he. bought the mare out of a selling event for £250. The bookmakers could not have had a better race. Hardly one of them had laid Myra Gray to any money to speak of, and all the ‘'double” events with Cambridgeshire horses have gone west. The bookies no doubt will now approach the Betting Tax, which is due to come into operation on November 1, with more equanimity, for they certainly have got a bit in hand to play with. There is no unanimity as to how the new tax is going to be paid. One section' favours the backei' paying on winnings and stakes, and the bookmaker on ail losing wagers; another section is going to pay the tax on losing bets, and charge it up on winnings only. It won’t be long before the bookmaker is advertising that he will pay the whole of the tax, despite his outcry that the business won’t stand a 3J per cent, tax on turn-over. For this is the only way in which he will retain his clientele.

A PROMISING PAIR. What amounted to a Cambridgeshire trial was the meeting of Mr. Sol Joel’s pair, Oojah and Prompt, and the Maharaja of Rajpipla’s Embargo in the Select Stakes of one mile. The latter eolt is the youngest, and he was conceding weight to the others, whereas in the Cambridgeshire he gets weight from Oojah, and is on the same mark as Prompt. Although the gallop was a really fast one for the Rowley Mile, Oojah never appeared to be out of a canter to beat Prompt by half-a-length, Embargo being another half-a-length further away. Fifty yards frem home Prompt was behind Embargo, hut the former put in a fine sprint to get second place. Strictly on paper, as the form stands, Embargo should reverse positions in the Cambridgeshire at the new weights, but the “trial” probably concealed more than it revealed. THE BOOKIES’ BONANZA! London, Oct. 28. Another bombshell was exploded in the ranks of English racegoers when the judge proclaimed Insight II to be the winner of the Cambridgeshire in the colours of “lucky Macomber” otherwise Mr. A. K. Macomber, the Franco-Ame-rican millionaire, who maintains the largest number of horses in training in the world. Last year, it may be recalled, Mr. Macomber brought off the Cesarewitch with Rosehearty, while now he has followed up Masked Marvel’s Cambridgeshire success with another by Insight 11. Thus in three years he has captured each of |he two most important back-end handicaps in this country twice. No wonder he is called “Lucky Macomber,” though there must be something other than luck present to ensure such success. He certainly has a lot to be thankful fo’r in having the services of Sam Darling at Newmarket at his command. In the case of Roschcarty, Forseti, and Masked Marvel, the English trainer had only to put the finishing touches to the splendid work put in by the French trainer, Clout, but so far as Insight II is concerned, Darling has had him in his stable for a year-and-a-half. Until it was proved in such manner as to make contradiction impossible, few experts credited Insight 11. with ability to stay the Cambridgeshire distance of nine furlongs. He was a well-backed horse at Ascot to win the Hunt Cup, but the few yeards beyond the seven furlongs proved his undoing, and he finished about fifth or sixth. He came out a the few yards beyond the seven furlong handicap very easily and all this seemed to indicate that something well under a mile was the horse’s best distance. Thus Insight 11. was allowed to start at 50 to 1 against for the Cambridgeshire. Yet he won this handicap against some of the best horses in the country in a canter—by three lengths! It was originally thought Masked Marvel would again be the chief hope of Mr. Macomber, but the horse went lame after running in a preliminary handicap a week or so before. Then The Sirdar, who had been sent back to France after finishing a moderate third in this race by the way, giving no signs of staying ability—was quickly summoned, presumably to deputise for Masked Marvel. Almost at tho last these plans were knocked on the head, for it was decided to run Insight 11. along with the three-year-old War Mist and the four-year-old Sun God 11., both of whom had previously been dismal failures in England.

FALLACIOUS CALCULATIONS. The favourite for the Cambridgeshire was the three-year-old Delius from the famous Manton stable controlled by Alec Taylor. Delius had done something big in a trial, so big, indeed, that it was decided to rely on him alone, and scratch well-known animals as Cross

Bow, Foliation, and Inca. Closely following Delius in the betting were the Maharajah of Rajpipla’s good three-year-old Embargo—second to Cross Bow in tho Hunt Cup and winner of the Irish Derby—Mr. Sol Joel’s Oojah, and Lord Rosebery’s filly, Plack. Looking back on the Hunt Cup running, it seems impossible that Insight 11. should have beaten Embargo for one, sipee the latter had finished in front of him at Ascot, was meeting him on a few lbs better terms, and, as the younger horse, was bound in the ordinary way tQ have improved naturally in greater ratio. But there it is— all human calculations, at any rate those outside the winner’s stable—-were rudely upset. Delius was the only one of the highly fancied division to show up prominently, and he had to be content with fourth position. The places that matter were filled by Bulger and another French horse, Asterus. Bulger’s is a curious ease. He had been showing good form earlier in the season, but, having incurred a 51b penalty, it was thought he could not beat Embargo, for the latter had easily proved the better of the pair when meeting in the Irish Derby. Stanley Wootton, thy trainer of Bulger, thought he held a better chance of winning with a more lightly weighted three-year-old called L’Aine, and this one alone received any attention until the day before the big event, when Bulger showed such forfii in beating older horses like Pons Asinorum and Sparus—the former Prompt's trial horse and the other figured in Delius’ trial—that it was decided, to let him take his chance as well as L Aine in the Cambridgeshire on the I morrow. And Bulger turned out to he the only one in a field of 32 to get anywhere near the winner, Insight 11. a The bookmakers have had a rare scoop over the Cesarewitch and Cambridgeshire this year, most of them having clear books, and the betting tax, which conies into force on November 1, should a ' e * errors f or them which they have been screaming would be the I* ' S th* baeker who is likely to
