FARM AND DAIRY.

A PROFITABLE SWEDE CROP. Extract from the Southland News: Just what a good swede crop is worth may be gauged from the returns received by Mr. A. Horne, Morton Mains, from a good crop of “Web’s Masterpiece” grown on his farm at Morton Mains last year. There were 27 acres of as nice a crop of swedes as one could wish to see, and out of these Mr. Horne sold 10 acres at £lO an acre. The remaining 17 acres carried a large number of sheep, which Mr. Horne took in to graze, returning him £133, and, in addition, 400 hoggets for the winter and 50 head of cattle for about six weeks. In all, tiie cash received for turnips sold amounted to £233, or just over £8 10s an acre, with a winter’s feeding for 400 hoggets, and six weeks' feeding for 50 head of cattle thrown in. That is the sort of crop which pays its way.
