DAIRY PRODUCE MARKET.

BUTTER TRADE BRISK. LONDON REPORTS IMPROVE. By Telegraph—l'reaa Assn.—Cop.n-.ght. London, Dec. 9. Tho butter trade is brisk. The rise in prices resulted from speculative as well as consumptive demand. The quantity of New Zealand stored is being reduced steadily; now there are only 200,600 boxes. Australian choice is quoted at 170 s, tin salted 1745; New Zealand controlled 174 s to 1765; stored 166 s to 170 s; Danish firm, 184 s to 185 s. Cheese.—-Quiet. New Zealand 95s to 965; Australian 92s to 945. The recent recovery of prices on the London market has considerably brightened the prospects for the new year, though it is considered unlikely that 1765, the maximum price for New Zealand finest grade, will bear much further increase. Christmas requirements have increased the demand, and it is open to conjecture what will happen when this temporary excess of demand disappears, but improved industrial conditions at Home, and the practical settlement of the coal strike, will do much to hold the market. Private advice received in New Plymouth yesterday gives the following prices as prevailing for the week ended December 9:— Butter.—lonic opened at 168 s to 170 s; good demand; price advanced 4s, then a further 2s, at whieh figure the demand was checked. Stored stocks are quiet at 168 s. During November cold stored stocks decreased between 25 and 30 per cent. Cheese.—-The market is quiet, prices ranging from 95s to 965. Canadian cheese stocks held in Great Britain are estimated as 8200 tons, as against 7000 tons last year, while in Canada there is a total of 9800 tons of cheese at present in store, an increase of 1800 tons over the figure for 1925. New Zealand cheese stocks, when compared with last year’s store totals, show an increase of 10 times —1000 tons as against 100. The improved prices in London will exert an influence on local markets, and butter in New Plymouth has been advanced Id a pound. Creamery is now quoted at Is 6d, separator (pats) at Is 3s, and separator (lump) at Is 2d.
