ROWING CLUB BALL

FUNCTION AT WAITARA. The ever-increasing popularity of dancing in Waitara was shown last night, when the Clifton Rowing Club s recently enlarged hall was packed to overflowing with a record crowd of over 300. When the hall was first opened by Mr. A. W. Ogle, the club’s president, on June 10. 1910. it fulfilled the needs of the club as a social hall, but of late years the committee found that the dancing room was anything but adequate, and an addition of 57 feet in length and 12 feet in width was decided upon. This, together with improvements to the ventilation and the ladies’ dressing room were carried out at a cost of £360, The large crowd present last night showed that the committee’s progressive policy had met with hearty approval. It is noteworthy that Mr. 11. Spurdie, the present honorary secretary, has held that position for 40 years, ever since the club was founded in 1887, a record of service that would be hard to equal in New Zealand rowing circles. A sit down supper was in the hands of the ladies committee and was daintily set out with tables decorated with flowers and the club’s colours. In the hall was a streamer canopy of blue and white (the club’s colours) with emblems of the rowing sport around the walls. The following was the committee responsible for a most successful gathering: Mesdaanes H. Spurdie, W. Spurdle, Chittenden, Jones, C. Limmer, Trim, Sampson, Rattenbury, Misses K. Cain, C. Spurdie, Ogier, Hutchison, Paul, G. Calgar and Messrs. S. Goddard (chairman), 11. Spurdie, O. Keith, C. Tate, W. Ogier, M. Sampson, R. Fowler and R- Hutchison (hon. see.). The music was provided by Orr’s de Luxe orchestra and dancing continued until the early hours of the morning. Though the charges were small the takings reached the fine figure of £45.
