ISOLATION OF LIGHTHOUSE

ABSENCE OF COMMUNICATION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, Dec. 9. Representations are being made by the Chamber of Commerce regarding the establishment of telephonic communication with the Portland Island lighthouse. The movers in the matter had a point given them yesterday, when the wife of one of the keepers became dangerously ill and there was no meant of summoning help. By chance the scow Koau came in sight about 9 p.m., and signals brought her close to shore. The woman was carried on a stretcher two miles overland and down precipitous cliffs, and was got on board safely and brought to the Gisborne hospital this morning. Had the weather not been exceptionally favourable her removal- could not have been effected.
