The Woodville summer meeting concluded in glorious weather. As on the first day, the totalisator receipts dropped considerably, being £14,144 against £16,803 last year, making the total decrease for the meeting £7369. Racing was first-elass all day and favourites did better than on the opening day, securing three firsts and one second placing. Taranaki horses did no good at the meeting and were conspicuous by not being in the money. All lined up for the Papatawa Hurdles, Gold Peak being accorded most support, with a good following for Pencils, Santonio and Boy. John Nod was first away from Axle, Peneus, Gurnion and Santonio. Axle was first over the initial obstacle from John Nod and Peneus, but Peneus was on terms with the leader entering the straight. Peneus was first past the stands from John Nod, Axle, Santonio ami Gurnion. John Nod, Peneus and Axle each took turns at leading along the back stretch, while Gold Peak moved up. Coming to the home bend, Boy moved up to fourth place, and Peneus was leading Gurnion and Axle. Peneus was first to the last fence from Gurnion, while Boy headed Axle, with Gold Peak, Santonio, Mountain Top and John Nod next and Rapiti a furlong behind the field. Peneus wa# too good for Gurnion on the flat and won comfortably by two lengths, with Boy six lengths back. Then came Axle, Gold Peak, Santonio, and Mountain Top. corrected his errors of the first day, giving a perfect exhibition of leaping, and should go far in this branch of tlie sport.' NOVICE STAKES TO TARANTO. There were no defections in the Novice Slakes, ami of a field of nine Taranto was made a £ll6 better favourite Ilian Comedic, with a big drop to Mint Julep and Truney. Elicit was fractious at the j barrier, but from a good start Comedic

and Truney were first out. Truney soon bad the lead from Comedic, Taranto and Doe, with Kindle on the outside. Truney led around the home bend, with Comedic, Taranto, Colarino and Kindle closing up. Taranto was actually first into the straight from Truney and Cornedie, with the rest of the field beaten off. Truney and Comedic challenged the favourite at the distance, but he had no difficulty to come away ami win by a length arid a half from Truney, who was ridden out to beat Comedic by half a length for second place. Colarino, Kindle, Elicit and Doe were next to cross the line. GREAT STRUGGLE IN MEMORIAL. Nukumai was the only absentee from the Gothard Memorial Handicap, and Piuthair was made an even money favourite, carrying £297 more than Novar, who had £195 more invested on him than Hynanna.. Bennanee and Kilfaire were at the head of the other quotations. Piuthair, Hynanna and Novar moved nicely in their preliminaries, Piuthair appearing a little on the big side. From a good start Benmure was first past the stands from Bennanee and Hynanna, but on the turn Novar and Kilfaire moved up, the favourite and Polyphemus being at the tail of the field. Going along the back Benmure and Bennanee were leading Hynanna, Little River, Kilfaire, Novar and Panart, the last-named moving up to fourth place for a time. Bennanee and Hynanna were ■ together going round the bend, with Benmure dying off. Novar, Kilfaire, Perle de Leon and Piuthair were next. Hynanna was first into the straight, slightly ahead of Bennanee and Novar. Piuthair made a forward move, but could not sustain his effort and retired, leaving Bennanee and Hynanna to have a neck and neck struggle up the straight. Hynanna made a great effort a few yards off the post and managed to gain a short head victory from Benannee, with Novar a length further back. Then came Perle de Leon, Piuthair and Kilfaire, with Benmure and Panart together next. The favourite drew the rails and missed the jump out, being snowed in most of the time. The race, however, should do her good and she is sure to be prominent at the Christmas meetings. Hynanna proved himself a good beginner and stayer, being within striking distance throughout and winning well from the pace-maker in a great finish.

KILMEZZO AGAIN. There were no defections in the Kiritaki Handicap, and of a big field of 17 Spode was made a good favourite, with a fair' following for Kilmezzo, Moepai and Miss Pat. Hypnotic and Hymgreat were the first away, but Polonaise and Royal Time were soon in front from Spode, Hymgreat, Kilmezzo and Moepai. Royal Time was well clear of Spode and Polonaise going on to the turn, with Hymgreat and Kilmezzo handy. Polonaise was actually first into the straight from Kilmezzo, Spode and Meric, who was covering a lot of ground. Pop Off, on the outside, put in a claim at the distance, but dropped back and at the half-distance Kilmezzo put in a strong challenge and finished better than Polonaise by a short head. Merle was two lengths away third and Bank Draft, Royal Time, Lady Cynthia and Hypnotic came across in a bunch, with Pop Off at the head of the remainder. Kilmezzo has proved himself a fair performer and is very speedy over short trips. Polonaise is a well-built filly by Rossendale, shows a fair amount of speed, and was unlucky to meet sueh a brilliant hack as Kilmezzo.

OPEN SPRINT TO NINE OF SPADES. Piuthair was the only defection from the open sprint. In an even betting race Nine of Spades was made a £52 better favourite than Epistle, with £5l less on Gold Box and a big drop to Oreum and Standard. Lin Arlington and Bonideer got the worst of the dispatch and Nine of Spades was first away from Gold Box, Lady Fingers, Oreum and Standard. Nine of Spades and Gold Box were together going round the bend from Lady Fingers, Standard and Royal Damon. Entering the straight Royal Damon and Standard made forward moves, and Gold Box got up on the rails beside Nine of Spades. At. the distance Cold Box, on the inner, and Royal Damon challenged, but the favourite had. too much in reserve and finished half a length ahead of Royal Damon, who snatched second honours from the unlucky Gold Box by half a head. Standard finished well in fourth place. Oreum, Bonideer and Lady Fingers were at the head of the remainder. The Hickey pair, Royal Damon and Epistle, got chopped about at the start, and only by a superb effort Royal Damon got up to within half a length of the favourite. GASCONY FINISHES WELL. All faced the barrier in the Juvenile Handicap. The Lowry bracket carried £3B more than Chelone, with Mandy the only other one fancied. Insulation delayed the start, and when the tapes went up swung round on Doree. Chelone was first away from Shrewd, Mandy and Gascony. On the bend Gascony spurted up to Chelone and was on terms with Chelone entering the straight, with Mandy close up. At the distance Gascony held a slight advantage over Chelone, and Mandy challenged, but Gascony drew out to win easily by a length from Mandy, with Chelone, who weakened over the last half furlong, a length away. Close up were Shrewd, Doree and Hymgrade. Insulation and Hine Hohoro whipped in the field. Mr. T. H. Lowry secured both the juvenile events at. the meeting. Auratum and Gascony both proved superior to the opposition. Mandy ran good ra«ees each day, filling second place each time, but Chelone was disappointing and appears to lack stamina. PENMAN BY A HEAD. Tiega was the only absentee from the Gorge Handicap, and Killocra was made a hot order, being £177 better fancied than Penman, with a drop of £129 to Aeriform. Beaumont and Polar were at long figures. The start was delayed for some time, but the field got away in line, Penman being first to show out from Beaumont, Blonde, Polar and Killocra. Going on to the home bend Killocra came round the field to second place and was on the outside of Penman and Beaumont entering the straight. Blonde put in a run, but Penman drew away from the field inside the distance. Killocra eame round on to the rails and nearly stole the race from Penman, just failing to get there by a head, with Blonde two and a half lengths back. Then came Startle, Beaumont, Polar and Aeriform. FINAL EVENT TO LADYKILLER. Hynanna and Asleep were withdrawn from the Stewards’ Handicap, and No Favours was installed favourite, with Ladykiller and General Wai next in demand. Ladykiller was first away from General Wai, Gordon Swift, Polyastra, Pop Off and No Favours. On the far Lend Gordon Swift was leading General Wai and Pop Off. Pop Off and Ladykilier made the running into the

straight, where General Wai came through and challenged. Ladykiller, however, was too good and won nicely by a length and a half from General wal, with Pop Off two and a half lengths back. Then came Vexatious, Mountain Star and No Favours. STRATFORD RACING CLUB. GODD NOMINATIONS RECEIVED.
