NOTES ON JUNIOR PLAY. THE OKATO TEAM. For the benefit of cricket generally and to encourage cricket down the coast, a correspondent has submitted the following notes on the personnel and accomplishments of the Okato team: — The Okato team are to be congratulated on their position in the junior competition. No doubt a great deal of their success is due to J. Coleman’s bowling prowess. He is second to none in the competition as a bowler, and in the field he is brilliant. Rutherford is a solid batsman and always makes runs. Edwards is a first-class batsman, a good field, and a fair change bowler. P. Corbett (captain) is a brilliant fieldsman, but with the bat is not meeting with much success. “Cook” Andrews l as been very consistent with the bat. “Cook” also keeps wickets fairly well. Allan Andrews, the High School boy, has been performing very well with bat and ball. “Mum” Knyvett has not get struck true form. Brooke, who generally opens the attack with Coleman, bowls a good length ball, medium paee. Batsmen cannot take too many liberties with him. Last Saturday Coleman performed a great feat, dismissing 12 batsmen for 24 runs during the game against Avenue Road at Okato. Coleman should be a certainty for the junior reps, this season. The rest of the team are steadily improving and as the season advances will surely be heard of. The followers of cricket in Okato wish to convey to Kingston and his team hearty congratulations on their brilliant performance in lifting the Hawke Cup from the Wanganui champions, and we hope that Kingston and his merry men will retain the coveted trophy for some considerable time. INTER STATE MATCHES. N.S.W. v. QUEENSLAND. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, Dec. 8. In their first innings against New South Wales Queensland have lost six wiekets for 323 (L. Oxenham 60, Thompson 43, O’Connor 103, Rowe not out 35). The match waa continued in ideal weather and on a good wicket, but the batting of the visitors was very dreary, they playing dogged cricket and defying the attack, scoring mainly by singles. The batsmen, refusing to take risks, scored only off loose ones. Oxenham took over three hours to compile bis score. When Thompson appeared the scoring livened up, but after he was dismissed it dropped baek, most of the balls being blocked. All changes in the bowling failed to tempt the visitors to take chances. SOUTH AUSTRALIA v. VICTORIA. Adelaide, Dee. 8. South Australia, in the second innings, lost eight wickets for 267 (Rymil 38, V. Richardson 92, Grimmett not out 33). Rayson took four wiekets for 74. South Australia won by two wiekets and three runs. V, Richardson’s splendid innings paved the way to victory. The weather was fine and the wicket still good. The South Australians fought hard to win, and in the first few overs batted carefully; then V. Richardson and Rymil commenced to open out, but a little later Rymil was eaught. With only the tail left, Richardson tightened ; the defence, as only 44 runs were required and the scoring slowed down. After Richardson went out the scoring was still slower, the last tlmee winning runs taking 10 minutes. HAWKE CUP MATCH. WIN FOR MANAWATU. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Marton, Last Night.
