NOVEMBER WEATHER

RECORD OF HEAVY RAINS. Bv Telegraph.—Preat Association. Wellington, Last Night. The following weather summary for November is supplied by the Government meteorological officer. Mr. D. 0. Bates: November is regarded as the last spring month and as such may be ■characterised as more than usually wet, windy and cold. The outstanding features of the month were the great floods in the Buller, Waihakaka and Wairait Rivers in the first week of the month. Heavy rains at the end of the preceding month had soaked the land and swollen the streams as well as leaving snow on the uplands, and when, on November 3, an extensive westerly low-pressure l.u.en with vapour made its appearance many things combined to account for the record floods. It rained every day from October 27 to November 6 in many place: on the West Coast, and the falls were excessive in the high country. At Arthur's Pass on November 3,4.94 in. fell, on the 4th, 12.70 in.. and on the sth, O.SOin. At Greymouth the falls on the same days were 1.34 in., 2.26 in., and 0.49 in.: at Reefton. 1.96 in.. 2.28 in., O.SOin.; at Westport, 1.40 in.. 1.91 in.. and 0.31 in. The rainfall was in excess in all parts of the country except Hawke’s Bay and some districts in Otago. Thunderstorms accompanied by hail were reported in many places, and one in Hawke's Bay on November 12 did much damage to orchards. Several light frosts occurred, particularly in the South Island, and a eold southerly wind, which brought snow on the uplands, on the 27th and 28th caused loss amongst newly-shorn sheep. Shearing and hiivmaking were greatly retarded and the griwth in vegetation was backward for the time of the year in many parts of the Dominion.
