ENCOURAGEMENT TO FALLEN
WIRELESS SET FOR PRISON. A decision to open a subscription list for the purpose of obtaining a wi’eless set for the New Plymouth prison was made at a meeting convened by the visiting justices at New Plymouth yesterday. Mr. R. AV. Tate, S.M., presided, others present being Messrs. C. E. Bellringer, M.P., W. C. Weston, P. E. Stainton, G. Fraser, R. H. Quilliam, R. Ellis, and W, Dineen. Apologies for absence were received from the Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson) and Messrs. G. J. Wyatt, J. Bennett and J. McLeod. It was explained to the meeting that the installation of a wireless set would mean the provision of a valuable means of recreation and instruction. and would to a largo extent dispense with the public concerts occasionally given at the prison. The meeting unanimously agreed that to the particular type of person segregated in the New Plymouth prison such a thing as a wireless set would be a means of mental and moral uplift that was entirely warranted, and that the influence for good and the preservation of the inmates’ Interest in current affairs and worthy things would be undoubted. It was stated also that permission to instal the set had been obtained from the Prisons Department. A committee consisting of the chairman and Messrs. G. Fraser, R. H. Quilliam, R. Ellis and P. E. Stainton (hon. secretary) was set up to organise the collection of funds. A maximum of 10s was decided upon with regard to the amounts to be accepted. The public are invited to subscribe to the funds, and any donations forwarded to the office of the News will be duly acknowledged and handed over to the committee. The subscription list will be closed on December 20.
