MONSIGNOR BURKE DEAD

ONE OF BEST KNOWN CLERGY. Tress Assn—Extraordinary. Invercargill, Last Night. The death occurred suddenly at six o’clock to-night of Monsignor Burke. He climbed a hill at the Bluff during the afternoon and on his return to Invercargill complained of feeling ill and died before a doctor arrived. Monsignor Burke, who was 70 years oi age, was one of the best known Roman Catholic clergy in New Zealand, He recently returned from a trip to Italy, where the Pope conferred the title of Monsignor. Monsignor Burke was born in Waterford in 1856, and was ordained in 1879. He arrived in Dunedin in 1882, being later stationed at Port Chalmers and Queenstown. He was appointed to Invercargill in 1896.
