DEFEATED BY SWINTON A THRILLING CONTEST. GAME LOST IN LAST MINUTE. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —-C.pyrlght. Received Nov. 28, 5.5 p.m. London, Nov. 27. The New Zealand League team was defeated bv Swinton by 16 to 14. It was a thrilling contest. Swinton started well, quickly gaining a five points lead when Beswick scored a try nliicli Morris converted. The New Zealanders then subjected the Swinton line to greater pressure, than it has known for a long time. Several attackers were held a yard from the line and several times the ball was over the line but a defender got there first. Eventually Mount kicked a penalty goal, this being the New Zealanders’ only reward in the first half. Morris also kicked a goal for Swinton, who led at the end of the first half by seven to two. New Zealand led nine minutes after the resumption, Desmond, Brown and then Desmond again scoring tries, all of which were the result of remarkable speed and delightful work. Mouat failed to convert any of them. • Swinton then attacked hotly and 'Morris kicked a penalty goal. A thrilling run by Davidson and Brown ended in the latter scoring a spectacular try from his own half. Swinton drew the scores level when Halliwell scored a try which Morris converted. There was feverish excitement in the last minute when Pearson dropped a goal, giving Swinton the victory. ° The New Zealand team played splendidly throughout, and was inferior to its opponents only in the scrums. The New Zealand team was: Gregory, Desmond, Davidson, Cole, Brown, Delgi'osso, Brisbane, Henry, Carroll, Herring, Mouat. Petersen and Avery.
