FREEZING WORKS DISPUTE
TROUBLE SPREADS TO PICTON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Blenheim, Nov. 25. The Picton freezing works are affected by the freezing dispute. A call was made for labour to day, but only one butcher and ten other workers responded. Nevertheless the works were carried on temporarily by arrangements made within the. works. The farmers’ organisations are arranging to .supply volunteer labour. FEILDING OPPOSES STRIKE. THE TIME INOPPORTUNE. Feilding, Nov. 25. A full meeting of the Feilding branch of the Freezing Workers’ Union last night passed a motion, by 46 votes to 24: "That the branch recommend the Hawke’s Bay workers that the demand for increased wages at the present time is inopportune and that tlie strike be called off, this resolution to be referred to all branches throughout New Zealand.” ■ • The local works opened this morning with voluntary labour. It is understood the unionists will be prepared to begin as soon as other branches have been notified. POSITION AT GISBORNE. Gisborne. Nov. 25. There were about 60 butchers on the boards at the two local freezing works this morning. The standard set by the union for an applicant for membership is a speed of eight sheep per hour and yesterday three men qualified at this rate, though they had only three days’ work on the board. The staffs now engaged are able to handle all stock forthcoming without trouble. WATRARAPA WORKS OPEN. Masterton, Nov. 24. The Wairarapa Frozen Meat Company commenced ' slaughter tg operations this morning with I’d' volunteer butchers. This number is sufficient for present requirements, but will be added to gradually from an extensive list of available volunteers. .No labouring hands have yet been engaged. There was no attempt at resistance by the unionists.
