NEW ZEALAND’S OUTLOOK
TRADE BALANCE IMPROVES
SPEECH BY HON. A. D. McLEOft
NO FEARS ABOUT THE FAILURE
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Nov. 24 Brief references were made by the Hon. A. D. McLeod at the conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce to the Imperial Conference and the admission of Germany to tlbe League of Nations. It must be obvious, ho said, that the present conference had materially altered,, or was going to niter, our position with the head of the Empire. It had set out a different status for the King himself and his representativoe which had apparently met with the ap. proval of all the Dominions and was, he believed and sincerely hoped, a further step in cementing with loosen chains the feeling they had for one anI other in various portions of the Empire. I Tlie admission of Germany to the League of Nations must have a big effect on trade, not only within tho Empire, but throughout the world. Mr. McLeod struck an optimistic note that, despite the present period of depression, New Zealand would eventually come out on top. New Zealand was a strong, wealthy country. We were now having one of our periods of depression, certainly, and would have them in future, and it was only by earnest hard work and a desire to view the difficulties of all sections of the community that we would be able to surmount these difficulties. So long as that spirit was shown by all sections of the community he did not anticipate difficulties. It was satisfactory to know that the trade balance for nine months of this year was more satisfactory than last, the export and the import figures almost approximating each other, and with the export period still ahead he had no fears about the position.
