A SUCCESSFUL MEETING KILFAIRE WINS THE CUP. MONAGHAN WINS THE RAUMAI. By Telegraph. —Preus Association. Palmerston N., Last Night. The Ashhurst-Pohangina Racing Club had a most - successful annual fixture to-day, conditions overhead and underfoot being ideal. The totalisator handled £10,430, or £385 less than last year. The results are: HACK HURDLES. One mile and a half. I—BLOOD RED (A. Won by half a length, with a similar distance between second and third. Time, Imin. 45sec. THE -RACING DESCRIBED. SI?VEN FAVOURITES' SCORE. BLOOD RED WINS OPENING RACE. (By Wire —Special to News.) Palmerston N., Last Night. The Ashhurst, annual meeting was held in ideal weather, the course being in perfect order. The handicapping was good and the numbers were correctly hoisted. In the many close finishes the public had good luck, no less than seven first favourites getting first money. Monaghan was the only Taranaki representative to carry first honours. < Killoch, Garzon and Merry Sarto were withdrawn from the Hack Hurdles, and of a good field of eleven Blood Red was accorded most support, with Polyastra. Tamakana and Tempean fancied in that order. Sometime dwelt at the start and Tempean and Polyastra went to the van from Empire Camp, Axle and Blood Red. Going out of the straight Polyastra headed Tempean, while Blood Red and Tamakana moved up. On the back stretch Tamakana was momentarily in front, but Blood Red made a forward move and at the home bend j was making play from Tamakana, Tempean, Polyastra and Empire Camp. Once in line for the judge, Blood Red walked away from the field to win by six lengths from Tamakana, with Gurnion three lengths further back. Then came Empire Camp, Axle, Tempean and Good Mark. WHITE RINGLET BY A HEAD. John Nod, Teremcana, Kilmezzo, Elicit and Whakahihi were withdrawn from'the Maiden, in which White Ringlet carried 48 more tickets than Miss Pat, with Truney and Molto the best backed or the remainder. Miss Pat began best from White Ringlet, Bissac, Plane and Del Sarto. Miss Pat and White Ringlet entered the straight together, just in front of Vexatious, Plane, Molto, and Eloquent. In a good run home
White Ringlet prevailed by a Lead from Miss Pat, with Powhiri half a length further back, just in front of Bissac, Vexatious and Plane. BONIDEER SCORES EASILY. All lined up for the Pohangina Handicap, in which Polyphemus was made a warm order, with Gold Box, Bonideer, Penman and Arataura fancied in that order. Prince Hal, Penman ami Arataura were troublesome at the barrier, and Penman was left several lengths, while Gold Box was first away ironi Bonideer and Polyphemus. Bonideer was soon in front from Gold Box. Bonideer was first into the straight, and went on well to win easily by four lengths from Gold Box, who was pushed out to beat Allmarimba by half a length for second money. Close up were. Arataura, Morose, Birkie, Polyphemus and Penman, with Prince Hal last. KILMEZZO WINS AGAIN. The scratching pen was greatly in evidence in the Komako Handicap, Starboard Light, Salamis, Bank Draft, I’artaga, General Wai, Bent, Some Lad, Take Take and Conviction dropping out. From an indifferent start Tea Leaves was first to show out from Rising Star, Gardant, Merle, Petal and Kilmezzo. Lin Arlington made a great effort and ran into second place with Kilmezzo and Merle following. Rising Star, Lin Arlington and Merle entered the straight together, but the top weight could not sustain his run, and Kilmezzo came along to win nicely by two lengths from Merle, with Petal half a length away third, just in front of Lin Arlington," Rising Star and Peggy Ford. Kilmezzo was favourite, with Lin Arlington and Rising Star next in demand. KILFAIRE S CUP. Sunshot, Penman, Misgovern and Stream were taken out of the Ashhurst Cup, and Kilfaire was installed the public favourite, with Killocra £ll7 less backed and £145 more than Nukumai, with Road Hog and Othon fancied in that order. Kilfaire moved freely in his preliminary, as did Nukumai ami Killocra, whilst Merry Day and Man Jong stepped patchily. Nukumai was fractious at the barrier, and when the. tapes went up the bracket, Pantier and Pangolin, were left several lengths. Kilfaire and Killocra were first to show out, but passing the stands Pangolin had run up to the van and was making play from Killocra, Kilfaire, Mali Jong, Othon, Merry Day and Pantier. Pangolin and Othon led into the back from Killocra, Mali Jong and Kilfaire, but on the home turn Killocra had moved up to Pangolin, with Kilfaire on the outside of them. Kilfaire was first into the straight from Killocra, Pangolin and Othon, with Nukumai moving fast through the field. In a great run home Kilfaire stalled off a determined challenge by Nukumai at the distance and, well served by his pilot (T. Green), wen by a head from Nukumai, with Killocra three lengths further back. Close up came Road Hog, Merry Day, Othon and Mali Jong. Nukumai met with considerable trouble throughout the race, which jeopardised his chance. Mr. R. F. Bollard, Minister of Internal Affairs, made the presentation to Mrs. W. H. Gaisford, and in a happy speech complimented all concerned in Kilfaire’s win. i CERF JUSTIFIES CONFIDENCE. Partaga. Volplane, The Bolter, Molto and Propeller dropped out of the Siberia Handicap race, and of a field of nine Cerf was backed as unbeatable. Cerf was first to show out from Bank Draft, Twink, Starboard Light, Royal Land and Horomea. Along the back stretch Royal Land ran up to the favourite, with Bank Draft, Starboard Light, an/ Twink next. Royal Land was first into the straight, but stopped quickly, and Cerf ran on to win by half a length from Addlepate, with Starboard Light two lengths back, followed by Royal Land, Twink and Horomea. MONAGHAN WINS NICELY. Askari, Morose and Mountain Top did not fulfil their engagements in the Raumai Open Handicap, in which the Taranaki horse Monaghan was installed favourite, with good money for Blonde, Lin Arlington and Misgovern. Birthmark and Arataura were first away, while Lin Arlington dwelt at the barrier. On the home bend Arataura was making play from Monaghan, Prince Hal, Newbury King and Misgovern. Monaghan was first into the straight from Prince Hal and Arataura, and in a good run home won nicely by a length and a half from Arataura, with Prince Hal a length back and Misgovern, Stream, Lin Arlington and Blonde next. BONHOMME WINS FINAL EVENT. Sottano and Vexatious were ■withdrawn from the Gorge Hack Handicap, and Bonhomme was accorded most support, with a strong following for Mountain Star and General Wai. Conviction was first to show out from a good start, with Mountain Star and Gordon Swift following. Along the back Bonhomme moved up and on the home bend had moved up to Conviction and General Wai. Bonhomme was first into the straight from General Wai, and in a good race to the post Bonhomme won by half a length from General Wai, with Capitulation half a length Iffhind, and Peggy Ford, Conviction and Gordon Swift close up. , FEILDING RE-HANDICAPS.
