Christchurch, Last Night. According to a cable received on Monday by a Christchurch firm, the early potato crop in Australia is a failure. While this is unlikely to have any effect locally this season, it may indirectly prove beneficial to Canterbury growers in the New Year. Meanwhile no fresh inquiries are being received, and tubers are stationary round about 35s to farmers at country stations, which are finding it difficult to quit. Seed growers are planting a large acreage. The area sown will apparently be larger than ever this year. The seed market is in a state of stagnation. Only good quality chaff is finding buyers, and there is a fair demand for A grade, the price to farmers at country stations ranging between £5 10s and £6. Oats which have stood in stack all the winter do not cut so well as those chaffed in the autumn and winter. A good proportion of chaff now offering is bright enough, but the weight is lacking. RIMU GOLD DREDGING. Hokitika, Last Night. The Rimu gold dredge washed up yesterday for three weeks’ work approximately thirteen hundred ounces of gold. This is the best return for such a period during the five years the company has been operating. As the result of certain operations recently completed, the prospects of good returns for the next two years are considered assured. WAIKATO STOCK MARKET. The Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Co., Ltd., report:— Beef.—The market is firm and although southern buyers have been operating, sufficient is coming forward to meet the demand, and prices have not improved since our last report. Grown bullocks, young steers, and good frame store cows are wanted, and there is a keen demand for good yearling Jersey heifers. Dairy Cattle.—Only small yardings are now coming forward, but good dairy cows and choice springing heifers are still meeting with good competition. Pigs.—The market is somewhat easier, big yardings coming forward, prices for baconers and porkers being equal to fid lb. Stores are still meeting with ready sale. Horses. —Good farm sorts are selling well, but heavy draughts and light horses are not in demand. LONDON WHEAT MARKET. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received Nov. 2, 5.5 p.m. London, Nov. 1.
