GOLF.
CLOSE OF WINTER SEASON. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. The golf season was officially closed at the Waiwakaiho links on Saturday, when the president (Dr. E. A. Walker) presented the trophies won by the men during winter play. As the club captain (Mr. P. Grey) remarked, it was only a closing day in name, however, for summer play was common now that the course and equipment had been improved. Mr. Grey extended a welcome to Dr. Walker and asked him to present the prizes. The improvement of play of both men and women, particularly among the junior members, was emphasised by Dr. Walker. Everything pointed to a successful future for the club. The caretaker (Mr. Sanders) and Mr. Jeffries, his assistant, deserved great credit for the excellent condition of the fairways, and to Mrs. Sanders was due thanks for the able manner in which she had provided for the comfort of members at the pavilion. The ladies were to be congratulated on winning the Taplin Cup from the Eltham Club, and for defending it against the challenges from Hawera and Eltham. The men had won the Seafield Cup from Hawera and'had retained it against the challenge of Eltham. Dr. Walker thanked Messrs. C. H. Weston and J. McNeill for presenting trophies and Mr. G. E. Jago for the re-donation of one. The trophies were then distributed by the president as follow: Senior Championship.—J. B. Wilson. Junior Championship.—A.. G. Johnson. Best Gross Score (qualifying).—P. Grey. Best Net Score (qualifying i< mds). — G. E. Jago (re-donated). Weston Trophy.—C. H. Stephenson. McNeill Trophy.—l. Thomson; runnel up, A. Thorne. Standish Cup.—C. H. Fyfe. Medley Cup.—-G. E. Jago. Labour Day tournament. —Four-ball (low ball), men: K. Akers and G. Haughton; captain’s trophy (best net score): Tie between F. D. Jeffries (Stratford) and K. Akers, won by the latter in play-off; Mr. Avery’s trophy (best net score), ladies: Tie between Miss Robertson and Miss Sangster (Stratford), won by Miss Sangster in play-off; ladies’ four-ball: Miss Sangster and Mrs. Smith (Stratford). MIXED FOURSOME. * On Saturday afternoon a mixed foursome was played. P. Grey and Mrs. Rea returned the best card. Details were:— P. Grey (scr.) and Mrs. Rea (25), 70 —13 —57; K. The official closing of the New Plymouth ladies’ golf season will take place at the Waiwakaiho links to-day. An all-day match will be played, and the prizes won during the season will be presented during the afternoon.
