DISTRICT NEWS.
URUTI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) There was a fair attendance at the annual meeting of the Uruti Tenuis Club, which was held in the hall on Saturday last. The ahair was occupied by Mr. S. S. Butt. Owing chiefly to the expenses incurred in top-dressing the courts the year was rather a lean one financially, the total expenditure being £66 15s 8d and the receipts £39 17s. There was a credit balance to commence the new season. In addition to competing for the Ferguson Cup the club had indulged in a number of friendly matches, and it was hoped with the experience gained to be well up in the running for the cup this season. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Patron, Mr. Rolles - ton, M.P.; president, Mr. H. G. Richardson; vice-presidents, Messrs. W. Oxenham, G. Oxenham, J. Smith and J. Allan; hon. secretary, Mr. R. Oxenham; club captain, Mr. D. S. Musker; vicecaptain, Mr. J. Bell; committee, Messrs. D. 8. Musker, A. R. Alpe, R. Burrows, J. Bell, S. S. Butt and R. Oxenham; ladies’ committee, Mesdames J. Bell, W. Marshall, Misses E. Smith, G. Thompson, O. Oxenham, K. Oxenham and M. Agate: handicappers, Messrs. R. Burrow’s and W. Marshall and Miss E. Smith; auditor, Mr. W. Marshall. It was decided to hold the opening on Labour Day, when a Yankee tournament, commencing at 10 a.m., will ■ be played. The local branch of the New Zealand Farmers ’Union held a social and dance in the Uruti Hall on Thursday evening, October M, and a most enjoyable time was spent. The rather inclement weather prevailing at the time no doubt prevented a large number from being present. The committee are deeply indebted to Mies E. Gibson, Miss M. Smith and Miss Z. Sheard, of Urenui, who provided items during the evening. These young ladies possess exceptionally fine voices, and all were deservedly encored. The accompaniments were played by Miss Marjorie Smith in her usual excellent manner. A cake competition during the evening was in keen request, the lucky number being drawn by Miss Ena Thompson. A small sum was also realised by the sale of a few parcels of cake. The music for the dancing was provided by Mr. 11. McNeil and partner, and extras were played by Miss O’Sullivan. Mr. W. Reisima officiated as
M.C., and the dainty supper served by Mrs. G. Oxenham and helpers reflected great credit on these ladies. Mr. C. Bradshaw, of Te Aro School, Wellington, has been selected to fill the position of sole teacher at Musker’s school, and commences duties on the Ist prox. RAHOTU. (From A Correspondent.) On Wednesday, October 13, a dance was held in the hall in aid of the funds of the tennis club. The function was a great success, and the secretary, Mrs. W. H. Butler, and her committee of ladies are to be congratulated. During the evening a “spot” waltz and a “Monte Carlo” waltz provided enjoyable amusement for all. The prize-winners in the former were Mrs. and Mrs. Betteridge, and in the latter Mr. H. Annis and Mrs. C. Field. In addition two other competions were held, one for a cake donated by Mrs. Butler, and the other for a box of 50 cigarettes. Messrs. Sands and Liiieham tied for the cake, while Mr. Quickenden won the cigarettes. An innovation that proved most popular was an ice-cream stall which did such good business that it sold out quite early in the evening. It is understood that the ladies will clear about £B, which sum will be of splendid assistance to the club. Should the proposal to hold another of these enjoyable dances materialise, it is sure to be very popularly received.
