THE PENALTY FOR CRIME
* PRISONERS SENTENCED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Wellington, Last Night. The following prisoners were sentenced by Mr. Justice Reed in the Supreme Court to-day: A Native named Wereta, 21 years of age, at present under a sentence of 12 months’ hard labour to be followed by two years’ reformative detention, appeared on four charges of forgery and uttering at Palmerston North. His sentence was altered to two years’ hard labour, the reformative period being reduced to one year. Robert Forbes Reid. 32 years of age. on nine charges of false pretences at Palmerston North, six at Tauinarnnui and five at Wanganui, was sentenced to two years’ hard labour on each charge, the sentences to be concur! ent. Charles Osear Bolstead, a farm hand, aged 21, for indecent assault and attempted carnal knowledge of a child at Hunterville, was sentenced to two years’ confinement in a Borstal Institute.
