SIR ARTHUR MYERS DEAD.

LIFE OF NOTABLE SERVICE. By Tdegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. A cablegram received in Auckland to> day announces the death of the Hon. Sir Arthur M. Myers in London yesterday after a brief heart attack. Sir Arthur Myers was one of the Dominion's best known public men. Born in Ballarat in 1867 he came to New Zealand three years later, and finished his education at the Wellington College, After a successful business career he became Mayor of Auckland in 1906. Amongst Sir Arthur’s gifts to the city were the town clock in Myers Park, mid £•>000 to the Karitane Hospital in the same year (1911).

From 1910 until his voluntary retirement in 1921, Sir Arthur represented Auckland East in Parliament. During that time he was Minister of Finance, Defence and Railways in the Mackenzie Cabinet in 1912, and of Customs. Munitions. Supplies and Pensions in the ; ational Cabinet. In 1»21 he retired from Parliamentary life to accept the L™ l ' don directorate of the National Bank of New Zealand. Sir Arthur was a keen sportsman and in his day was a representative footballer. swimmer and oarsman and bowler. In the course of his military career he' was Lieut.-Colonel commanding the New Zealand Motor Service Corps.
