DOMINION AND STATES.
MR. COATES IN AMERICA.
“THE FRIENDLIEST RELATIONS.”
EOOM FOR TRADE IMPROVEMENT.
By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received Oct. 8. 9.15 p.m. Washington, Oct. 7. The Right Hon. J. G. Coates called On President Coolidge and had an interview with Mr. Kellogg, Secretary of State. A dinner was given in his honour at the British Embassy by Mr. H. G. Chilton. Minister Plenipotentiary, in the absence of the Ambassador, Sir Esme Howard.
Mr. Coates, interviewed, said immediately upon his arrival in America he found everywhere the friendliest feelings for Xew Zealand. American business men were not only commenting upon the good trade relations already existing with the Dominion, but were anxious to be informed of the directions in which they could be improved. The people of the United States felt America was linked up with Britain through the alliance in war and by the bond of a common language and a common basis for legal and political institutions. Mr. Coates pointed out concerning trade, that he had informed American business men that New Zealand already bought »,three times rs much from the United States as the latter purchased from New Zealand, and it rather looked as if the next ’ move was up to the United States.
