AMERICAN DISASTER.
FURTHER AREAS AFFECTED. AN ISLAND DEVASTATED. MANY DEAD AND INJURED. New York, Sept. 21. News from Miami states that it is estimated there, are 400 dead, 5000 injured and 50 missing as the result of the hurricane which devastated an area of 60 miles along the east coast. News from New Orleans states that a tropical storm severed communications between Mobile and the outside world on Monday. The meagre reports indicated that there was no loss of life at Mobile, where extensive preparations were made for the storm as the result of the forecast by the weather bureau. It is believed the damage is not serious. News from Mobile states that a survey to-day, .after 19 hours battle with the hurricane, reveals property damage estimated at several hundred thousands, chiefly unroofed structures and damage by water. Birmingham, Alabama, reports heavy property damage and probable loss of life through the storm. The first .word received from Pensacola, Florida, since communication was severed yesterday’, reports that the docks and railway buildings are in ruins. A message from Grand Turk, Turks Island, Bahamas, states that 4900 are homeless and immense property damage has been caused in Turks Island and Caicua as the result of the hurricane. Received Sept, 22, 5.5 p.m. New York, Sept. 21. The Island of Bemfi, in the Bahamas Group, 130 miles from Nassau, was davastated by the hurricane of last week, according to reports reaching Miami. These are confirmed by the crews of tug boats which arrived on Tuesday from that vicinity. They said they did not attempt to land to seek for any dead and injured ■persons.
