ALL BLACK LEAGUE TOUR.
THE DEFEAT OF DEWSBURY. THIRTEEN POINTS TO NINE. NEW ZEALANDERS HANDICAPPED. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Loudon, Sept. 12. The New Zealand touring League football team won the first match of their tour by defeating Dewsbury by 13 points to nine in the presence of 16,000 spectators. They were handicapped in the first half by a strong wind and lack of acquaintance with the intricacies of the rules, especially regarding scrummage, in which they did not obtain possession as frequently as they might. They were also misled by the referee’s blue coat which resembled the players’ jerseys. The referee later appeared without his eoat, Lyman’s penalty goal was the only score in the first half, but he missed two others. In the second half the New Zealanders showed greatly improved form. Hall broke away and passed to Sanders, who kicked. A Dexvsbury player pulled .him down and the referee awarded a penalty, from /which Dufty goaled. Dewsbury then made a successful run, ending in Ryan obtaining a try which Lyman converted. The New Zealanders gallantly rose to the occasion. Kirwan and Davidson combined in a run to score, and Dufty again goaled. Lyman again scored a penalty goal and. then Avery ran. in, Dnfty’s kick striking an upright. Finally a brilliant run by Hall, Avery and Mouat saw the last-named score. Critics declare that Hall is a glutton for Work and Cole and' Gardner are excellent. They expect better displays in the future. The New Zealanders scored three tries and two goals, Dewsbury one try and three goals. The New Zealanders missed several chances ' owing to defective passes.
