The Australian cricketers commenced their match against North of England, the last fixture of the tour, to-day, and have made 229 runs for the loss of five wickets. Heavy rain in the morning delayed the start until after lunch, the match commencing at 2.15 p.m. The wieket had been covered and with' the strong sun and breeze when play commenced it was in good order, but rather soft. Root and Parkin opened the bowling, making an auspicious start, for in the third over Taylor succumbed to a confident appeal for leg before off Root. Woodfull meantime played solidly. Macartney batted brilliantly, scoring by fours accurately placed over the heads of the closest field. He was finally dismissed when he drove straight into the hands of the mid-off. Collins batted quietly, both he and Woodfull apparently feeling the effects of the long overnight journey to Blackpool. Nevertheless he batted attractively. Andrews batted sparklingly amt Woodfull continued solidly. He was never uncomfortable. Richardson was brilliant, scoring willi many powerful drives. He pulled Root strongly to the leg boundary. An appeal against the bad light by Richardson was sustained, and play ended at 6.15 p.m. Woodfull had batted doggedly throughout, taking thq heart out of the bowling. The scores are: — AUSTRALIA.
