No thoroughbred seen South of the Line has, or had, a stouter strain of blood than Sheffield’ His grandsire on the male side is St. Simon and on the dam’s side Wolf’s Crag. His great grandsires were Galopin and Ayrshire (sire's side) and Barcaldine and Isinglass (dam’s side). These are names to conjure with, and columns could be written of the performances of the progeny of the great sires named. Sheffield, during his short stay on the turf, was a successful performer, and his sire, Bright Steel, also had good performances to his credit during the short season. At the stud he was a great success, his progeny being noted stayers. He sired winners of a Melbourne Cup (Westcourt) ; Sydney Cup (Scarlet) ; Victorian Grand National Hurdles (Sparkling Moselle) ; also Chrome, one of rhe best stayers of recent years.
