CANTERBURY MARKETS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. The week has been a sorry one for potato holders for tlie market has tumbled in a inau' ner that has no parallel in recent years. Potatoes bought in June for September at £8 5s a ton were re-sold to-day at £3 15s. ThLs probably represents the two poles of the movements, but many, thousands of pounds were represented in the decline from £7 to £4. The losses are not borne wholly by local operators as Sydney buyers have imported several thousands ot tons that are showing Joss of at least 50s a ton and others more. The local market has been depressed throughout the season by the accumulation of potatoes at southern ports. It Is only this last week that this, aecniniation of white potatoes has practically disappeared, and this has been brought about by the shipment per the Kurow last week from Timaru and Lyttehon of 12,flirt) sacks, and per the Waipori thia week of 5000 sacks. At th© moment Sydney is not responding to the local offers. Operators apparently have bought forward as heavily as the market can absorb. The Whangape is due to sail on September 8 for /Sydnel. Tho potato market has monopolised all the attention and beyond oats being from at recent quotations of 4s 3d. to 4s f.o-b. sacks in for A’s and B's respectively, there is really little to report. These are southern prices, local A’s being worth up U 4s 6d. A few lines of wheat are floating around at 8s 6d to 9s a bushel, but buyers are standing off at this price. The seed market Is quieter again after ft brief activity In retail business. A small orca of barley and also «»f peas Is he!t>£ grown on contract at 5s <sd per 'bushel on trucks.
