SOVIET AND CHINA.
GOVERNMENT ATTACKED. EXPEDITION ORGANISED. HANKOW THREATENED. By Telegraph—Press Aysn.-—Copyright. Received Sept. 3, 7.30 p.m. Pekin, Sept. 2. The situation in China is the most critical that has arisen since, the revolution of 1911. The Central Government is threatened with extermination by the Bolshevik Chinese forces. An expedition under Russian leadership threatens to capture Hankow, where Marshal Wu-Pei-Fu, defending commander, was wounded in the chest to-day. So far the tide of battle favours the Cantonese and defence reinforcements are being rushed from the north. Yesterday Wuchang was captured by the Red forces threatening the city. British warships are rushing marines to the defence of the foreign residents in Hankow and are convoying merchantmen. They threaten to fire at the first shot from the Red forces. Marshal Sun-Chuan-Fang, who is controlling Shanghai, is sending reinforcements to assist Wu-Pei-Fu. There is no doubt that the Russian Soviet is largely financing the whole expedition.
