MR. J. C. N. GRIGG’S DEMISE. FAMOUS BREEDER OF STOCK. OWNER OF WORLD'S MODEL FARJI By Telegraph.—Press Aasociatio®* Ashburton, Last Night. Mr. J. C. N. Grigg, of Longbeach. died this evening at the age of *l9 years. As owner of the famous estate onca described as the world’s model farm, he was known throughout New Zealand and abroad. Succeeding his father, Mr. John Grigg, in 1901 he worthily upheld the traditions of the estate which, though reduced in area of late has not diminished in fame. Mr. Grigg w’as born at Auckland in 1861 and was educated at Christ’s College, Christchurch, and Cambridge University. On returning to New Zealand in 1883 he became overseer of Long, beach, acting in that capacity until the death of his father. His importations of pedigree cattle, horses, sheep and pigs have had beneficial effects on Dominion stock. The first line of Holsteins brought to New Zealand were imported from Holland by Ixim. Mr. Grigg also owned some good trotters and gallopers, his father having owned Spot, son of Gentle Annie, the foundation of trotting stock in the Do. minion. He took a keen interest in the Ashburton A., and P. Association, being president in 1888-9. It is noteworthy that .Mr. Grigg's father was the first president of the association, and his son, Mr. J. H. Grigg, occupied that posi. tion in the association’s jubilee year. He was at one time a member of the County Council, a member of the Power Board since its inception, a member ef the Meat Producers’ Board and many, local and public bodies. In his youth Mr. Grigg wns noted as an athlete and Rugby player and was a keen cricketer. He is survived by hie wife, who’ was a daughter of the late. Captain Hutton, curator of the Canter, bury Museum, and also three sone, Messrs. J. H. and A. N. Grigg, Longbeach, and G. H. Grigg, Hororata, ami two daughters, Mesdames McDonald (Christchurch) and Shaw (England).
