NOTES ON THE GAME. <By "Circle.”) Mr. C. Prior has selected from the Northern Division the following players for the trial match to be held at Stratford on Saturday:—Misses Knapman, Nightingale, Sturmey, Johnson and ■James (from the Technical Old Girls’ team), Misses L. Ovenden and (M. Thompson (the Ureiuii Club), and the Technical College will be represented by Miss Taylor. Miss Knapman should get a place as centre-forward. For the wings either Misses Nightingale, Sturmey or Thomp-. son should be successful Miss Taylor plays a safe game in goal. The Rovers Hockey Club, though not successful in competition matches, have some very fine players as can be seen by the fact that C. Prior and J. DeeForges play in the Taranaki representatives against Wanganui at Wanganui on Saturday, while J. Gray was selected aa an emergency. The competition for tho trophy donated to the Urenui Club for competition in the Northern Division will probably not take place this week owing to the trial match at Stratford. Hockey chibs at present seem to bo very hard up. Perhaps if the clubs banded together and followed, the Eitham Ladies’ Club by running a popular girl week they might secure some of the much-needed cash. The scheme is no doubt profitable as the Eitham ladies showed a profit of £-80. At the meeting of the Wellington management committee this week a financial statement of the Indian Army match showing a profit of £492 14s lid was submitted by the treasurer. The announcement was received with satisfaction. Every hockey player should have some knowledge of the rules. Regarding corner hits a long corner is taken from the same side as the ball on when it crossed the back line. Tho striker taking the corner should take his hit from any point on the side or back line within three yards of that corner flag. A short corner may be taken from either side of the goal, from a point not less than ten yards from the nearer goal post. This means that the striker must be at least ten yards from the goal. There is no rule compelling a referee to blow the wliistlo immediately before a player takes a corner hit. There is also no necessity for a referee to use the whistle for bullying except in the beginning of each spell. Many referees have adopted this practice in ladies’ hockey, but in men s games it is never done. When is the ball in the striking circle? This is a question that has puzzled some referees. The rule is quite definite on the subject, and states that the space enclosed by the lines including the lines thcnMelves shall be called the (striking <*irclc. I horofcrc the bail, it on the circle line, is deeiiK‘l to be in Hie strikin'’' circle. If c.n the goal line insi.h- the i-.i-to or outside t’.’e posts it is st'!' in p’ay h: H - !:as C!i
tirely ptresed over tho linn between tho goal posts or outside the posts. “Entirely” should be noted. The following players have been selected by Messrs. C. Pennington and J. Davidsin to represent Taranaki lit Wanganui on Saturday:—Goa), A. Bennett (Eitham): backs, C. Daviea (Kltham), 11. Briggs (Kaponga), J. Gray i (New Plymouth); halvce, V. Bette (Kapouga), L.
