A ROYAL FISHMONGER.
DUKE OF YORK’S PRIDE. The Duke and York was recently made a fishmonger, having been admitted by patrimony to the Freedom of the Fishmongers’ Company. He expressed his pride as being thus associated with the company in the splendid work it is doing, both as regards the fishing industry itself and its educational and philanthropic schemes. "The history of the company,” said the Duke, “is one in whieh every member may justly take pride. Its great influence was originally due to the importance of fish as a staple article of the peoples food; and it still preserves to-day its ancient connection with the original trade. The valuable part it played in the national life is shown by the twenty or more charters granted at various times from the reign of Edward 1., ami, ,to quote but one example, by the assistance yon have given to technical education you have proved yourselves worthy upholders of the fine traditions of the Guild. You have referred to the connection of my own family with the Fishmongers’ Company. My brother, the Prince of Wales, and I represent tiie fourth generation who have been members, and I earnestly hope it will be my good fortune to see my daughter represent the fifth.”
