OPUNAKE NEWS.

HARBOUR AFFAIRS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Friends of the harbour scheme will be i gratified to learn that the second petii tion of ratepayers that the extra £5OOO I be raised and the works proceeded with, i has more signatories than the first one. The first petition, it will be remembered, condemned the works as a waste of money, and petitioned for their discontinuance. It is understood that there arc actually more country ratepayers on the second than on the first petition, and that many of these stated thereon that they had signal the first under a misapprehension. It 4s significant that many, of the signatories of the first/ petition have admitted that they were really in favour of the raising of the extra £5OOO, which robs the first petition of a lot of its value for one of its clauses was that no further money whatever be borrowed. GOLF CLUB. The Opunake Golf Club hate erected a clubhouse on the links near the hospital, and this will be found very useful for the players anti visitors. Although at present the building does not boast of being ornamental, its suits its purpose. building progress. Visitors to Opunake remark upon the progress in building made in recent years. Over thirty houses have been erected during the last two years, and several business premises are in course of erection. The New Bank of New Zealand building is rapidly assumiiiig shape, and, though small, will be an ipiposing brick edifice. Several new houses will be erected shortly on the harbour leases that have been let near the hospital. Five have been let so fa)( and the remaining four sections offer splendid facilities for those desirous of building. Many people prefer a cliff site to the beach, where conditions arc too crowded.
