THE FATEFUL FIGURE 13. The figure “13” figured prominently at a Southend inquest on Irene Campbell, who was killed in a collision with an omnibus while cycling. She would have been aged 13 in a month's time; there were 13 letters in her name, and the number of the omnibus w-as 1313. Less than two hours before the tragedy her mother removed to 13, Wenlram Drive, Westcliffe, from 13, Ashfield Road, Harripgay. A verdict of “Accidental death” was returned. # * * # WOMAN BITES POLICEMAN-. Elizabeth Jane ucn, a burly woman, was charged at Low Street with biting the fingers of two constables who were taking her to the station on an ambulance. Mr. Fry, the magistrate, remarking that biting a person was not only a disgusting offence, but might lead to serious results, sentenced the woman to 14 days’ hard labour. Later in the day her husband appealed to the magistrate not to send her to prison, as, apart from this offence, she bore a good character and had a largo family to look after. The magistrate relented so far as to remand Mrs. C'lementson for a. week on (c bail in order to see how the bitten t officers were going on. j
