FOOTBALL.

CENTRAL DIVISION MATCHES. RESULTS OF PLAY. Light misty rain distracted somewhat from the junior matches played to-day in the central division competition. Nevertheless keen matches were witnessed, and the positions of the leading teams were such that good crowds assembled at Stratford, Cardiff and Inglewood. The results were: Celtic 9 v. Cardiff 0. Stratford 17 v. Pukengahu 0. Toko 21 v. Inglewood 3. CELTIC TOO FAST FOR CARDIFF. The Cardiff team seemed to have a day off and did not play with their usual dashing style in the match, against Celtic at Cardiff. The mist was somewhat thicker at Stratford, and the ball soon became very slippery, but the ground was firm enough for the Celtic backs to give a fine exhibition, especially in the second half. Their score was made up of a converted try scored by Burns and a field goal. The ball came out of a scrum to Hampson, who dashed round to the other side and shot it on to Casey, who" gave Burns an easy pass, enabling him to run in and score. Burns was well out of position, but was found extremely convenient. Casey converted, easily. Ten minutes later Casey drop-kicked a fine goal. He was bustled at the time and had to take direction in a hurry, which, together with the greasy ball, added to the merit of the kick. If the first half was rather ragged, the second was good football. Despite the handicap of weight, the Celtic forwards played a fast and vigorous game, and were ably backed up by their rear division. It was team work by fitter men that won the match for Celtic, but they received great assistance from the kicking of Casey and Davey. Several fine forward rushes were initiated by the Cardiff pack, but an unfortunate tendency to overrun the ball frequently ’ turned an aggressive movement to the advantage of Celtic, who were quick to seize every opportunity. Lawrence and Lehmann were the pick of the Cardiff forwards, while Hancock and Lobb were prominent among the backs. In the Celtic teain Keegan and Franks showed up well among the forwards, and Casey and Davey in the backs. Mr. J. H. Thompson refereed. STRATFORD 17 v. PUKENGAHU 0. The Pukengahu first juniors were- defeated by the Stratford team at Victoria Park by 17 to nil. A light, misty rain made the field very heavy, but during the match little rain actually fell. Throughout the game Stratford pressed heavily, and Pukengahu’s defence was taxed to the utmost. The game was spoilt by continual off-side play and feeble handling, with frequent blind passes. From the kick off Stratford pressed heavily, and Pukengahu soon forced. The blacks featured several passing rushes, all of which were spoilt by blind passing. Childs and Philips (Stratford) each nearly crossed the Hue, but were stopped by the Pukengahu backs. Hunt and Childs turned a serious defence into a brilliant offensive, but the slippery nature of the ball prevented sure handling. From a scrum Stratford forwards pressed, and L. Hinton scored. Shortly afterwards a passing rush allowed Phillips to make a fine run and score for Stratford. Half-time wa: called soon after. From the kick off a passing rush was started from a scrum, and Robson scored near the posts. Grubb added the extra points. A nice passing rush by Pukengahu ended in a forward pass, and from the resultant serum Stratford pressed and Pukengahu forced. Fast play by Stratford resulted in a serum on the line, but Pukengahu saved. From a line-out the ball passed out to Phillips, who scored in the corner. The try was not converted. Another combined Stratford rush resulted in a five yards scrum, but the backs mulled the ball and play remained about the twentyfive. The play now improved, but at no time was it brilliant. Grubb carried the ball towards the line, and Henry dived over to score. Pukengahu then pressed and crossed the line, but no score resulted. Pukengahu pressed again, but Stratford's defence was too sure. The game ended.--17 to nil in favour of Stratford. Mr. A. H. R, Amess refereed. TOKO 21 v. INGLEWOOD 3. By scoring 21 points to 3, Toko secured a runaway victory over Inglewood at the latter’s home town. Had the visitors possessed a sure place kick in the team 14 additional points would have been added, for the score represented seven unconverted tries. In both forward and back divisions Toko outplayed Inglewood, and after the first twenty minutes the game was almost wholly in their favour. Strangely enough, Inglewood opened the scoring, when Allen kicked a tine penalty goal, but the home team could add no further points. Tries were scored for Toko as follows: Jones 2, Wilmshurst 1, Cuff 1, Walter 2, Sangster 1. THIRD GRADE RESULTS. Toko 21 v. Inglewood 3. 5.T.11.5. 9 v. Celtic 0. Eltham 24 v. Midhirst 0. TARANAKI RUGBY UNION.

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS. A meeting of the management committee of the Taranaki Rugby Union was held at the Central Tea Rooms, Stratford, last night, when there were present: Messrs J. McLeod (chairman), W. A. Guy, J. Paterson, F, M. Whyte, R. R. Tyrer, W. H. Moyes, J. Garcia, E. H. Young (hon. treasurer) and S. E. Neilsen (secretary). Apologies were received from Messrs J. Goodwin, L. J. Furrie and 0. Casey. REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES. I The Bush Rugby Union wrote confirming the arrangement to play Taranaki at Hawera on July 3. Mr. W. A. Guy reported that the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Union had willingly agreed to meet Taranaki at Hawera on July 7, members of the Hawke’s Bay Union stating that Taranaki had met them similarly in 1920. It was decided to make special arrangements for extra seating accommodation at the match, and special stand seats will be sold prior to the matches at New Plymouth, Hawera and Stratford. It was further deckled that the cliarga for the temporary seating be 6d on Saturday and Is on the Wednesday, seats to be sold on the ground. The charge for the matches was fixed at 2s for gentlemen and Is for ladies, and boys over 14 at 6d. It was decided to declare all games off on Saturday, July 3, and on Wednesday, July 7. Notification was received from Wellington stating that it was- impossible to send a team to Taranaki owing to their heavy programme. It was resolved to ask the Wellington Union to release Taranaki from playing the proposed match at Wellington in September of this year, as that would entail a special trip, whereas next year Taranaki could include Wellington in its southern tour.

OFFENDERS DEALT WITH. Mr. A. H. Guy, referee in the City v. Tokaora match at Hawera on Wednesday,, May 25, reported having ordered A. Seagcr (City) and H. Taylor (Tokaora) off for having come to blows during the match. Both were young players and felt the disgrace of being ordered off very much, and he was of the opinion that a caution would meet the offence. Mr. W. A. Guy stated that ft was reported that the Wednesday committee had already dealt with the men, standing them down for a fortnight. Members, however, pointed out that the Wednesday committee had no jurisdiction, the Taranaki Rugby Union being the only body authorised to deal with offences by players. " It was resolved that in the terms of the referees report the players be cautioned. It was also resolved to inform the Wednesday committee that the Taranaki Rugby Union is the only body authorised to deal with players who are reported. Mr. W- L. Hughes, referee in the Star v. Old Boys fourth grade match, reported having ordered C. Shaw and D. Crapper off for rough play. He considered a warning would be sufficient. It was decided to warn the players. Mr. A. J. Boon, referee in the Toko v. Stratford third grade match, reported having ordered off Collins, captain of the Stratford team, for using foul language. It was decided to suspend the player for the next two Saturdays. REINSTATEMENTS. The action of the executive in granting the applications for reinstatement of A. Collins (Stratford) from senior to first junior, and of A. J. Barnes (Celtic) from senior to first junior, was confirmed. The Celtic Chib also asked, through the Stratford Club, that the reinstate-, ment of E. McCullough be reconsidered. It was resolved that the Union saw no reason to alter its decision. Applications by Stratford for the reinstatement of H. Hinton from senior to junior, and of Opunake for the similar reinstatement of W. Gordon, were approved. Opunake applied for the transfer of E. N. Owen (Athletic). —Granted. PROTESTS, Mr. T. Houlahan, secretary of the Okaiawa Club, wrote expressing surprise at the action of the Union in orilering the Eltham-Okaiawa junior match lo

be replayed, as they were not notified that a protest had been lodged; nor had they been asked for an explanation or given a chance to defend the ease. The club considered that unjust. They therefore asked that the matter should be reopened, and Okaiawa given a chance to defend the case. The players complained of were bona fide members ot the Okaiawa Club for the past three seasons, and it was the Wednesday clubs that should be penalised for playing them, knowing them to be Okaiawa members. It was staled by the chairman that as Okaiawa had written asking permission to play Linn and Hooper, who had been objected to by Eltham last Saturday, stating that these men were financial members of the Okaiawa Club for three years, but when Okaiawa were unable to put a third grade team in the field they foolishly played in a Wednesday match, though they intended to go on playing Saturday football, and Okaiawa, in their ignorance, gave them a game, considering them eligible to play for Okaiawa. It was decided to defer the matter, sending Okaiawa the reasons for coming to the decision. The Okaiawa Football Club protested against Waimaje fourths playing a lad named Bourke, whom, they alleged, was residing in the Okaiawa district. A letter was received from E. Bourke, father of the lad in question, stating that he worked in the Waimate district. It was accordingly resolved to dismiss the protest. The Waimate Club also asked that the Waimate-Eltham junior match be replayed, as it was impossible for them to get to Eltham in time to play at 1.15 p.m., the time of the match having been altered at the last moment by the Eltham Club, so as to allow a friendly game to be played. The matter was held over pending an explanation from Eltham. GENERAL. Patea were granted permission to play Wanganui Marists on June 16. The Inglewood Borough Council notified that it had decided that in future the Inglewood Club would be notified not later than 10.30 a.m. on the day on which there was a fixture, and it was considered by the board that on the occasion complained of, the ground was unplayable. It was also resolved that the Taranaki Rugby Union be notified that the council did not see its way clear, in view of the circumstances, to curred as a result of the closing of the contribute towards any expenses inpark on May 22. It was resolved to draw the attention of the southern clubs where there is no third grade competition, to the necessity of adhering to the age limit in the third grade. It was also resolved to vote £5 to each of the secondary schools entering teams in the fifth grade. Accounts were passed for payment totalling £498 10s 3d, including £lB5 to elubs.
