PROGRESS OF BUILDING.
NEW STRUCTURE COMPLETED. FILLING VACANT SPACES. Vacant spaces in'the main streets of New Plymouth are being rapidly filled by modern buildings, and the latest addition is the Egmont Chambers, of three stories, which occupies the gap left between the Opera House exit in Egmont Street and the State 'Fire Office. The final touches are now being given, and the building will be ready for occupation in about a month. The front presents a pleasing appearance, having been finished in white plaster, and a suspended verandah overhangs the window of a roomy shop, which runs back the full length of the section, 32 feet. The walls,_ the floor, and the roof are all in reinforced concrete, and are sufficiently strong to support additional stories should they be needed. With this idea in view provision has been made for the installation of an electric lift, though at present the upper floors are reached by a stairway leading off a wide entrance next door to the shop. A feature of the design is the lighting arrangements. Each of the floors above ground level is subdivided into five offices by wooden and glass partitions, and there is provision in the basement for a cellar. The architects were Messrs. Messenger, Griffiths and Taylor, and the builder and owner is Mr. A. O. Brown.
