ALLEGED SLANDER
LABOUR LEADERS ISSUE WRITS. ALLEGED RED SYMPATHIES. By Teleffraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Feb. 28. Mr. Cook, miners* secretary, has issued a writ against the Duke of Northumberland claiming damages and an apology as th© result of th© Duke’s speech, at Birmingham declaring that Mr. Cook was a Third International representative on the Miners’ Federation executive. Mr. Cook strenuously denies this and says his orders come from the British miners and from nobody else. He has no connection with the Third International Mr. J. Wheatley, ex-Cabinet Minister, is claiming £3OOO damages for slander from the publisher of the Glasgow Eastern. Argus, also £3OOO from Mr, Miller, his political opponent, in connection with a letter published in tho Argus allegedly charging him with dishonesty, crookedness, meanness and displaying excessive interest in. the convicted Communists. The action follows Mr. Wheatley’s challenge of £lo*oo to anyone to publish the unfounded rumours circulating in Glasgow,
