THE PEOPLE’S. RICHARD TALMADGE IN ‘■THE SPEED KING.” This new style production features one of the favourite character actors on the screen. The world’s champion motor-cycle racers took part in “The Speed King,” racing against Dick. A representative machine from four wellknown makes was chosen for the race, Dieli mounting an Indian. Track officials clocked them at 112 miles an hour for ten miles. A fine romantic story abounding in dramatic moments, and intensified excitement provides opportunities of which full advantage was taken by the producer. All the supporting films are intensely interesting and up-to-date.
EVERYBODY’S. “LORRAINE OF THE LIONS.” Recent debates on evolution, as expounded by Darwin seem to have left the world in a turmoil with opinions divided as to whether we descended from monkeys or whether the Bible is right in the study of creation. Attention is again drawn to this matter by the picture shown at Everybody’s last evening. This picture produced by Carl Laemmle, is called “Lorraine of the Lions,” and. offers a most interesting study on the Darwinian theory. It is the story of a little girl rescued from a shipwreck by a giant gorilla and carried of to a jungle island inhabited only by wild animals. She spends twelve years on the island with the animals as her only companions, becoming wild herself, and forming animal habits. The gorilla becomes infatuated with her and acts as her protector, and his almost unbelievably human-like actions throughout the picture would almost convince the most sceptical that the theory of evolution was more than plausible. However, there is another side to the story which would lead us to believe our early teachings are correct, and a visit to Everybody’s to-night or to-morrow will provide food for reflection.
REWI’S LAST STAND. NEW ZEALAND FILM AT OPERA HOUSE. i This remarkable picture which was shown at the Opera House last night is one that, no New Zealander should miss. This especially applies to those who pride themselves as being residents of the Garden of New Zealand. The true history of the early days of New Zealand and of Taranaki in particular is presented in most attractive form. The film which was wholly made in New Zealand by New Zealanders portrays in a most lucid and enthralling manner all the stirring events of early days. Those who have heard the old folk describe the difficulties and dangers of 5 the early days of the settlement of Taranaki will be able to grasp more fully the trials of our brave pioneer men and women. To the old folk themselves, the film has a great appeal. Many of these who saw yesterday’s screening, -repressed amazement that scenes of the pa-'t could be so faithfully reproduced. ■Rewi’s last stand” shows finally at the Opera House to-night- An excellent programme of music is supplied by the Opera House orchestra.
