PERSONAL.

Mr. John McCabe died in the Wei* lington Public Hospital yesterday morning at the great age of 190 years 9 months. He was a native of Ireland and fought in the Crimean War, Indian Mutiny and Maori War. He afterwards settled in the Rangitikei district. About six years ago he came to Wellington. He retained all his faculties till quite recently.

The death of Mr. Joseph A-bbiss occurred at Hamilton on December 20 at the age of 89 years. Mr. Abbiss came to New Zealand as a young man and had spent the greater part of his life in the • Wanganui district. In recent years he Lad lived in New Plymouth, lie leaves a family of two sons and four daughters, the latter ineluding Mrs. S. Metcalfe, of Huiford Road; and Mrs. W. Hinkley, of Cutfield Road, New Plymouth

The death occurred in Huntley, Auckland, on Thursday, of Major James t I’Sullivan, for many years director of stores to tlie Defence Department, Wellington. Major O’Sullivan, who was a native of Ireland, came to New Zealand >u the early days, and became attached to the old armed constabulary, which the Government set up in the early days as the nucleus of a permanent force. He was immediately concerned in tlie equipment of the various contingents at the time of the war in South Africa, and was also director of stores during the earlier years of the Great War.

Dr. Desmond Frengley, of Wellington, who obtained his medical degree recently, is the third member of the family of Dr. J. P. and Mrs. Frengley, of Karori, to commence a university course at Victoria College and finish at Otago University. Miss Maureen Frengley, B.Se. in home science, is now seuior science mistress at the Girl’s High School, Christchurch. Dr. Gerald Frengley, the eldest son, has just been appointed medical superintendent of the Bay of Islands Hospital. The remaining member of the family, Joseph M. Frengley, is this y-ear’s dux medallist of Wellesley College, and also secured the upper school junior championship medal at the recent college sports.
