LAWN TENNIS.
NEED FOR COACHING. They are searching for Suzannes in England nowadays. Some authorities hold that the fault of English tennis lies in the fact that there is no firstclass coaching. The players themselves arc keen enough, but lessons in footwork should be given twice a week, or more often. At the present time the coaches who visit the girls’ schools are mostly men. Joan Austin, now Airs. Randolph Lycett, says that she received no coaching at school, save an occasional word from the games mistress, who knew less about tennis than the girls themselves. She advocates the use of qualified women ‘coaches, who might visit the schools. The best idea, however, is that girls should watch first-class tennis, and go to all the big tournaments with a coach or teacher to explain the play. A practical lesson could be given Inter.
