MELBOURNE CUP.

DESCRIPTION OF THE RACE. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Sydney, Nov. 4. The Herald, commenting on the race for the Melbourne Cup. says: "Rounding the turn Manfred forged ahead and led into the straight, but in the next halffurlong, Windbag caught, up, and inside the furlong had Manfred beaten. There was no mistaking the brilliance of Windbag. Marjfred ran a good race bur, reaching the straight, began to tire. Pilliewinkie was a good, honest horse throughout, but on the day Windhag was master from the half-mile. Only once, in 1894, has his performance been eclipsed.” The Telegraph says: “At the half-mile it was apparent that Manfred, Windbag and Pilliewinkie had the rest of the field outclassed. Passing the two furlongs post, rhe opinion was that Manfred’s light weight would enable him to win, but Windbag’s magnificent. staying powers were overlooked. It was a great race, and no excuse can be offered for the defeat of Manfred and Pilliewinkie, who went down to a better horse.”
