The weather was fine and bright to* day for the races at Flemington. There was an enormous attendance, estimated at 130,000. The Governor-General and the State Governors were present. Several New Zealanders attended. The track was fast. Windbag won the Melbourne lt was a great race. Windbag wore Manfred down in the last, furlong. The winner received a great ovation on returning to scale. Windbag is trained, by a New Zealander, George Price, who formerly was private trainer for Mr. Goring Johnston, of Palmerston North. Munro states that he had a good race. Windbag was always going nicely. . Dempsey • stated that Manfred pulled hard in the early stages, but otherwise went well. The veteran. R. Lewis, said it was the best and cleanest Cup he had ever rode in. The third horse, Pilliewinkie, is trained by a New Zealander, R. W. King. Windbag was purchased as a yearling for .€l5O by a New Zealander on behalf of Mr. F. Earl, Auckland. The purchaser disliked the horse on its looks * and asked the breeder to be relieved of the sale. The winner cost 110 guineas ae a yearling. Agricolo always led in the Cup Steeplechase and won by half a furlong. Irish Rufus and Winchaldean fell. Mercian King finished with a good tun in the Yean Y’ean Stakes and won brilliantly from Ambassador, who was ridden by A. Reed, an ex-New Zealander. Just after the six furlongs Manfred and Windliag went tp tlie front and led around the turn from Pilliewinkie. Manfred had a slight lead into the straight, but Windbag cut him down in the last furlong and won by half a length. Pilliewinkie was a length away third and Tookarby was fourth. Then came Gungool, Slave, Royal Charter, Valamita, Baldwin, Accarak and Our Prince, with Wallarak last. The time was 3niin. 2235ec., which equalled the Australian and New Zealand record. The first four furlongs took 51sec., the next four 51 sec., the. succeeding four Clusec., and the last four 49|sec. CUP STEEPLECHASE. Two miles and a distance. —Agricolo 10.0 1, Master Fife 9.5 2, Mandelman 9.3 3. Seven starters. Won easily by thirty lengths, a neck between second and third. Time, 4m in. Bsec. YEAN YEAN STAKES. One mile.— Mercian King 9.2 1, Ambassador 7.1 a 2, Blackadder 8.10 3. Thirteen ran. Won by a length and a half, half a length between' second and third. Time, Imin 381 sec. Jimmy B was fourth.
