With the approach of Saturday, Ootober 24, interest is quickening in tlys big cycle road race round Mount fifmont, which is set down for decision #h that date. For weeks past local riders have been engaged in road practice and generally putting the final touches to their training operations. The runnning of a series of short road races through - out the winter has kept enthusiasts in good form; indeed, there has been a revival in the sport which during the v, ar years and those succeeding naturally fell on lean days. Nominations for the big event are now beginning to trickle in, and the indications point to a big field, including many of the Dominion’s leading riders, facing the starter at New Plymouth. R. Nicholson, of Wanganui, who gained the New Zealand road championship as the result of his splendid performance in the recent Timaru-Christchurch race, intends to compete in the mountain marathon. At present Nicholson is in Auatialia, and he will be riding in the Warrnambool to Melbourne road race (165 miles) ne.vt Saturday. Other prominent riders who have nominated are.: D. Nicholson (Wanganuii and W. Mackift and C. Bell (Christchurch). In addition entries have been received from riders at» Hastings, Hokitika, Kaikoura, Ashburton, South Canterbury and other parts of the Dominion. Officials to control the gathering were appointed at a meeting of the Circular Road Race Committee.at New Plymouth last night. The election resulted as follows: Chairman, Mr. J. Hawkinsj judges, Messrs. W. C. Weston and L. A. Nolan; handicappers, Messrs. J. Soeats and J. K. Hawkins; starter and timekeeper. Mr. J. Bennett; course and call stewards, Messrs. J. K. Hawkins, A. George, C. Bond, M. Julian, E. Jackson, F Gable; riders’ room on course, Mr. (. Sadler; blackboard steward, Mr. Frank Sykes: gatekeepers, Messrs. Isaacs, J. Johnson and F. J. Hill (subject to consent); entertainment subcommittee for the race night, Messra. J. Seeats, O. George and Isaacs; motorcar race stewards, Messrs. G. Priest, O. George, W. Roebuck; protest committee, Messrs. J. McLeod, A. George and E. L. Humphries; refreshments to riders, Mr. J. Seeats; programme committee, Messrs. B. Tippins and 0. George; check stewards, Messrs, J. McLeod and. A. George; result board stewards, Messrs. E. Jackson and M. Julian; cycle and running stewards, Messrs. J. Bennett, A. George, W. Dineen, C. Grainger, G. Priest and C. Roebuck; riders’ apparel steward, Mr. C. Roebuck; Avenue Road stewards, Messrs. Hancock, O. George and F. Sykes, It was decided to accept Mr. T. Thompson’s offer to conduct a professional boxing tournament between D. Loveridge (New Plymouth) and either A Hayes (Hastings) or W. Walden (Palmerston North), with several amateur bouts as well, on October 22, for the. benefit of the circular road race funds.
