The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram dated August 15 from the High Commissioner for New Zealand. London ; BUTTER. Market quiet but firm, and tendency upward. Danish .production begins to show slight deollne. Official quotations are : New Zealand. —Finest salted: 196 s to 198 s per cwt (Is B%d to Is 9d per lb) ; unsalted, 198 s to 202 s per cwt (Is 9d to Is 9%d pe? r Ibj. Other qualities: 190 s to 192 s per cwt (Is 8 l-4d to Is BVad per lb). Australian. —Salted: l-90s to 194 s per cwt (la 8 l-4d to Is 8 J / 2 d per lb) ; unsalted. 192 s to 196 s per cwt (Is BV£d to Is B%d per lb). Other qualities, salted, 168 s to 188 s per cwt (Is 6d to Is 8d .per lb) ; unsalted, 170 s to 180 s per cwt (Is 6 l-4d to Is 7%d (per I'b). Fair demand at auction. Present quotations a.’e for spot:—Mutton, fine, 50s per cwt; fair to good, 46s to 48s per cwt; dark to dull, 425. 6d to 44s per Cwt; beeif, sw,eet and/or mixed, 49s to 50s 3d per cwt; fair to good, 44s 6d to 47s 6d; dark to dull, 41s 6d to 48s per cwt; mixed, fair to good, 44s to 47s 3d per cwt; dark to dull, 41s 6d to 42s 9d per cwt; gut, etc., 38s to 42s 6d per cwt. TARANAKI STOCK MARKET. Messrs Newton King, Ltd., report:— At Urenul on August 17 >we had an exceptionally heavy yarding oif bot/h store and dairy cattle, the latter including the dairy herd on behalf of Mr. Lewis and several specially advertised lines on behalf of other clients. In the store pens the yarding consisted mostly of store and forward cows and yearling and two-year-old empty heifers. For all classes inquiry was keen and prices kept up to a level equal to late sales. Quotations were: —Forward conditioned cows, £4 to £5 10s; young stora cows, £2 10s to £4; forward conditioned emipty heifers, £4 19s; two-year-old empty heilfers, £3 12s to £4 7s; small yearling steers, up to £2 15s; good quality yearling Jersey heifers, £5 3s 6d to £5 12s; Jerseycrc.ss yearling heilfers, £2 17s to £3 10s; ordinary heifers, up to £2 ss. Several pens of sheep came t : ward and all sold well; 2, 4 and 6-tooth /ethers, store and forward conditioned, 37s 8d to 38s 2d; empty ewes. 33s 6d; hoggets, 27s 9d. The advertised entry of pigs .sold on a par with recent prices, weaners making up to 17s 6d; slips, up to 255; and small stores to 295. In the dairy pens, the advertised herd on behalf of Mr. H. 1. Lewis were the first cows to be offered, and all that were due to calve early, and showing the Jersey strain sold well. The top price was £25 for a particularly nice grade ' cow, and other Jerseys sold from £9 up to £l3. A number of the herd were somewhat backward and these made from £4 IDs to £B. Dairy cows on behalf of other vendors also sold well, particularly those that were close to or at profit, the best making from £lO to £l6 10s. There was also a keen demand for well grown springing heifers, good Jerseys making from £9 to £l2 ss; and crossbred belters, from £6 to £9.
