PUKEKURA PARK.
MEETING OF THE BOARD. The Pu'kekura Park Board met last night. Present: Messrs. H. Dempsey (chairman), F. Amoore, G. M. Spence, C. E. Bellringer, W. C. Weston, W. F. Short, A. T. Moore and P. E. Staiiito’i (hon. secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. J. McLeod and R. C. Hughes. The work of trimming the dangerous branches off the large pines had been seriously interfered with, on account of the man doing this work being ill, reported the park superintendent (Mr. F. Horton). The man was now back at work, and if all went well this job should be completed in a few days. The work of painting the garden seats in the park was now finished, and the painting of the boats with three coats of paint both inside and out was nearly completed, while the boats had been repaired where necessary. All the pines but one on the racecourse boundary had been felled and cleaned up, and he hoped to have this one felled and removed shortly. The sloping bank near the racecourse had been put in good -order, and about 200 trees planted. When grown, this should be one of the beauty spots of the park, some of the trees planted there being very ra-e indeed. The vacant piece of land on the south side of John Street walk, which lie had been authorised to plant, had been prepared an-d planted. Along the- western side of the park the land had been dug and prepared where necessary, and pohutukawas and karakas planted. He would require several hundred iotara stakes for labels, and Messrs. Boon Bros, had generously offered to donate these. A consignment of water lily roots had been sent to the town clerk of Hawera for planting a “lakeiet" in the Hawera reserve.
A vote of thanks was passed to Messrs. Boon Bros, for their donation. A letter was received from the Taranaki committee of the New Zealand Association of Nurserymen thanking the board for the services of Mr. Horton in connection with the forestry exhibit at the Hawera winter show. It nnd been suggested that the committee should supply trees to the value of £l5 to the board or a cheque for £lO. An indication received from the board as to which would be most acceptable would receive the committee’s immediate attention.—The matter was left in the. hands of the chairman.
It was decided to present to the Taranaki Jockey Club the old flagstaff lying near the southern terrace, as it was of little use to the board The chairman and Messrs. McLeod and Stainton were appointed a committee to go into the applications for th? position of lessee of the tea rooms.
