LOCAL INDUSTRY.

A PLEA FOR SUPPORT. GRAMOPHONES IN SCHOOLS. By Telegraph.—Frees Association. Wellington, Last Night. The claims of locally made gramophones for use in schools as against those of imported machines were pressed by a deputation representing the New Zealand Industrial Corporation and Manufacturers on Sir James Parr and the Hon. G. J. Anderson to-day. The President of the Corporation, Mr. W. Atkins, urged the Government to carryout its policy of preference to New Zealand industry. In regard to gramophones be said the manufacturers at present were able to turn out a wholly New Zealand made article with the exception of motors, which were imported from Britain. Mr. Atkins said some education boards had expressed the wish to give preference to New Zealand made goods and he hoped the Ministers would recognise the claims both from a practical and ethical point of view. They were prepared to satisfy the Ministers that the tone and other features were equally good as those Of the imported articles. Sir James Parr, in reply, said the present contract was for one year and local (manufacturers would have opportunity of tendering next year. He had been advi~?d that the British machine was the best for school purposes-and cheaper than the instrument made in New Zealand. Mr. Anderson said -jf they w-ere to manufacture in New Zealand they must jnake an article equal to the very best.
