APPEALS FOR FUNDS.

AVOIDING OVERCROWDING. COUNCIL ALLOTS DATES. A way out of the difficulty caused by the possibility of several appeals on the charity of the New Plymouth public being made close together was suggested to the borough council last night, following on discussions of the matter between the Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson), Cr. V. Griffiths, and the bodies concerned. The British Red Cross had asked for August 21 for making a publio collection, the Taranaki Hospital Board for October 23, in which month the Salvation Army usually made their annual self-denial appeal, and the Plunket Society for November 20. The Mayor said that) the hospital board was averse to the suggestion which had been made that it should combine with the Red Cross in a joint appeal for funds. It was the intention of the board to use the funds raised for the purchase of a new motor ambulance and to collect not only in New Plymouth but in the country. He had pointed out that too many appeals would be made elose together, and had suggested to the board that it postpone its appeal till after the new year. He believed the board would agree to that. The Mayor thereupon moved that the Red Cross and Plunket days be approved and that the hospital board be asked to submit a new date for early in the new year. The .Salvation Army date would be allocated when final application was made. The motion was carried.
