MARSLAND HILL.

PROPOSED MOTOR ROAD. COUNCIL UNSYMPATHETIC. The proposal that a motor road should be constructed to the top of Marsland Hill did not meet with the support of the New Plymouth Borough Council last night, when a letter on the subject was received from the New Plymouth Tourist and Expansion League. “If people don’t like to walk up there, let them stay down below,” was the comment of Cr. J. Brown, when the league pointed out that the lack of a motor road did not allow of the best advantage being taken of the reserve. “There are more urgent w’orks in the borough than that,” remarked Cr. IV. W. Thomson. The Mayor said that the league had in mind that an endeavour should be made to get prison labour for the construction of the road and that the council should provide the material if that labour was obtained. Crs. Brown and Kibby pointed out that the metal was the most expensive part of the work. Furthermore, it would be useless putting down a road without tar-sealing it. Cr. V. Griffiths suggested that the council should not turn the matter right down. There was no doubt that a road to the top would greatly enhance the attractions of the reserve. On the motion of Cr. Brown, seconded by Cr. Thomson, the council decided not to take any action.
