NEW PLYMOUTH COUNCIL. The New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson), Councillors J. Kibby, G. A. Colson, J. Jemison, W. W. Thomson, J. Brown, J. Lobb, A. E. Surrey and V. H. Griffiths. Advice that the Plumbers’ Board of New Zealand would be prepared to hold an examination for plumbers’ certificates in New Plymouth next November provided that a guarantee of six candidates for the practical examination was given was received from the secretary of the board. The letter stated that the board endeavoured to arrange examination centres wherever possible, but in order to do this it must have sufficient candidates. It had been requested by the Minister for Finance to conduct the examinations as cheaply as possible, and therefore it had many things to see to before it arranged its centres. The council decided to enforce the by-laws relating to plumbing and. to ask the Plumbers’ Association to inform apprentices that an examination will be held in November. Mr. T. M. Ball, resident engineer, Public Works Department, asked whether the council had any objection to a proposal to close a portion of Kent Road under the Public Works Act. Mr. C. R. Stead (Waitara) advised that, having an interest in one of the sections that would be affected by the closing of the road, he objected. On the motion of the Mayor consideration of the letters was held over until next Monday. The Mayor and Councillors Kibby and Brown were appointed a sub-committee to deal with the proposed extension of Princes Street, Fitzroy, and to report to the council. The engineer (Mr. W. H. Cook) submitted four plans suggesting schemes for dealing with the land not required for the road extension. Consideration of a request that steps be taken to prevent further erosion at the East End reserve by the sea was deferred. At a committee meeting of the council last week a request for action was made by a deputation from th® reserve committee, comprising Messrs. Sinclair, Morris and Woodham Mr. H. Baily is to be informed that his request that the building by-laws be waived in regard to the wall of May and Arrowsmith’s building cannot be acceded to, and that the council expects the owners of the building to take immediate steps to comply with the undertaking in the deed relating to the matter entered into in 1912. Mr. G. Beamish is to be informed that when the cottages mentioned by him have been erected, the footpath on the north side of Gill Street, between Hobson Street and Brown Street, will be formed. Petitioners for a footpath on the west side of Fitzroy Road are to be informed 1 that the council cannot see its way to accede to their request. Messrs. Nolan and Co. are to be informed that the council adheres to the principle of ultimately widening Parsons Road to the full width of 66 feet.
