THEFT OF PENNIES.

TWELVE THOUSAND STOLEN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, July 9. John Muir appeared in the Police Court charged with stealing 12,000 pennies from slot telephones. The evidence of detectives was that accused was seen loitering about the telephone booths at the General Post Office. It had been suspected that tampering was going on, as the records showed that the receipts had diminished. A watch was kept on Muir and when arrested he admitted obtaining £5O by manipulating the machines. Muir pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence.
