Warders at midnight thought to surprise the escaped Parkhurst prisoner, who during the service at the prison took a flying leap into the pulpit, climbed the beams above, and disappeared through a skylight. He spent the night and a day on the roof. However,.he was wide awake, and, sheltered behind a chimney, he sent out a fusilade of slates. The warders were not hurt, and they overpowered the convict, whom they roped up and lowered to the ground. He had been without food for thirty-eight hours.
