CARPET CLEANING HINTS.
Here is a little hint that will help to keep carpets looking bright after they have been swept. After sweeping and beating the carpet, wipe it with a mixture of soap-suds and turpentine. The solution should be in the proportion of about a gallon of soap-suds to two teaspoonfuls of turpentine. This will effectively remove all dust, and make the carpet come up brightly time after time. JSEFUL HINT. Tlie housewife who does not posses* stainless knifes, nor yet a knifecleaning machine, should clean lier knives in this way: Hold the blade of tlie knife between the folds of an old, rag which has been sprinkled with some good metal polish and rub for a few moments. To preserve the handles of bone or ivory a good colour, give them a weekly rub with French chalk. The chalk should be mixed into a paste with water, and this should be applied to the handles, left on to dry, and then polished off with a dry duster. If mustard is mixed with milk instead of water the spoon will not be blackened. Ink stains can be removed if salt is applied at once. Stains on kinfe handles can be removed if rubbed with lemon and salt. To prevent sausages bursting. Up them in boiling water before frying Before using a siphon invert it for a few minutes. This ensures a steady flow with no spluttering. Glycerine rubbed over corks will keep them from sticking in the necks ot bottles and phials. Wien making mint sauce sprinkle a little sugar over the mint and it ean be chopped more quickly. Carrots, beetroots, and parsnips may be preserved in dry sand or earth in a dark cellar. Twp or three stalkj of celery boiled with cabbage improves the flavour and lessens the disagreeable odour of cooking. To freshen stale vegetables, soak for an hour in cold water to which tlie juice of a lemon has been added. A small cube of camphor placed in the oil receptuble of a lamp will make it burn more brightly and less smokily. To remove coffee stains from a delicate material, brush the marks with pure glycerine, rinse in lukewarm water, amj press on the wrong aide.
